Project summary
[edit]Briefly summarize your project proposal.
Nigerian literature holds immense cultural, linguistic, and educational value, yet a large portion of it remains underrepresented across Wikipedia and wikidata. While visibility has grown on Wikipedia and Wikidata showing 233 recorded books on Wikipedia and 939 literary items on Wikidata. This project aims to address these gaps by improving the documentation of Nigerian books, authors, and literary works across the Wikipedia and wikidata.
After organizing a successful Wikipedia Awareness event last month during the celebration of Wikidata’s 13th birthday, we decided to introduce a Wikipedia related project that new university students/editors can easily connect with—Nigerian Literature.

Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
We will be have One physical event and One edit-a-thon contest
Physical event: The physical event will serve as a practical, hands-on training session designed to introduce both new and old editors to the documentation of Nigerian literature on Wikipedia. Building on the momentum created from last month’s successful Wikipedia Awareness event held during the celebration of Wikidata’s 13th birthday, this session will provide participants with the foundational skills needed to contribute effectively to Wikipedia.
During the event, participants will learn how to identify notable Nigerian books, authors, and literary works that are missing or underrepresented online. Facilitators will guide attendees through the process of creating and improving articles on Wikipedia. The training will involve step-by-step demonstrations, practical editing exercises, and opportunities to explore existing gaps such as the currently recorded 233 Nigerian books on Wikipedia and 939 literary items on Wikidata.
In addition, students will be introduced to sourcing standards, citation practices, and the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural and linguistic heritage through digital documentation. The physical session will also encourage peer learning, collaboration, and open discussion on how Nigerian literature can be better represented globally through Wikimedia platforms.
Edit-a-Thon Contest: There will be an edit-a-thon contest After the event for participants to create and improve wikipedia articles and also be among the top contributors to win prizes during the period of the campaign.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal?
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
We have informed the wikimedia Users Group Nigeria about our intention to write this proposal.
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
Awareness and Advocacy: A core objective of this project is to create strong awareness about the Nigerian Literature Documentation Campaign while also expanding the reach of the Wikimedian Fan Club. To achieve this, we will utilize E-fliers, printed fliers, posters, and handbills to inform students and the wider university community about the goals of the project. These materials will highlight the importance of improving the online representation of Nigerian literature on Wikipedia and Wikidata. and they will also introduce new editors to the activities of the fan club. This approach ensures that both the campaign and the community gain visibility and attract new participants.
Communication Strategy: To maintain smooth and effective communication with our existing and new community members, we will make use of the fan club’s WhatsApp platform. This space will allow us to share updates about the project, provide learning resources, and guide participants on how to engage actively in documenting Nigerian books, authors, and literary works.
In addition, we will publicize the campaign across various social media platforms to broaden participation and encourage more students to join. Participants will also be encouraged to follow the campaign’s Meta page, where they can stay updated on project activities, editing guidelines, and contest outcomes.

During the edit-a-thon, we will have open sessions on the community group where we can hear and assist them if there is any issue they can’t seem to solve on their own and also encourage them to follow up activities in Nigeria and the global community.
