The International Literacy Day 2025 in Gombe Network project aims to address the literacy gap in Gombe Wikimedia Community, where many people can speak local languages fluently but cannot read or write in them. This challenge limits access to knowledge and participation in knowledge creation in local Wikimedia projects in these languages such as Hausa and Fulfude. In line with this year’s theme, “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”, we aim to organize booth camp training in September to promote literacy in the major language spoken in gombe which is Hausa. Through community outreach and Booth Camp community members will learn how to contribute effectively to creation and use of Wikimedia content in local languages, fostering inclusion, cultural preservation, and mutual understanding.

1. Virtual Session 1 (Week 1): Training and introduction to the project.
2. Physical Session: Hands-on training and recruitment of new and existing editors.
3. Virtual Session 2 (Week 3): Q&A session to address participants’ questions and challenges.
4. Month-long Edit-a-thon: Continuous editing and contribution activities throughout the month.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The network's WhatsApp group will be used for announcements continuous engagement for sustainability of the initiative.

Targeted posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and distribution of e-flyers. We will also collaborate with local radio stations to reach a wider audience, especially in rural areas.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Some of the participants may not have the skills needed to contribute high-quality content. To address this, we will provide support and trainings to enhance their skills.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Post training evaluation will be conducted using Google forms to measure impact and learning which will form strategy for future engagement. The project’s WhatsApp group will serve as a venue for continuous engagement and communication.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project goes beyond celebrating International Literacy Day; It will also introduce more people to Wikimedia projects in their native languages, creating lasting engagement and strengthening our movement’s multilingual vision.

Metrics tracking

How do you plan to track your project metrics? (do not create a metrics dashboard until your project has been approved for funding) We plan to track our project metrics by utilizing the Programs & Events Dashboard to measure contributions during the edit-a-thon.

Contest & prize-giving events

How would decide the winners of your contest (If you are going to have a contest, what is your scoring criteria) Winners will be determined based on the quality and quantity of their contributions during the campaign, using the following scoring criteria:

1. New/ Translated Wikipedia articles in local languages: +10 points each
2. Improved Wikipedia articles (at least 1,000 bytes, well-sourced): +5 points
3. Quality referencing (reliable sources/citations): +3 points
4. Adding media to hausa Wikipedia articles: +5 points
5. Translation of Wikidata item Description into Hausa: +3 points

Scores will be tracked via the Wikimedia Event Dashboard, and the top three contributors will receive recognition and prizes.
