Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Mr. Snatch/Introducing to Wikisourse and Awareness to Borno Wikimedians

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The project aims to engage Borno Wikimedians and the broader Hausa-speaking community by introducing them to Wikisource, addressing the current underrepresentation of local contributions. Despite the availability of significant texts for digitization, most content related to Northern Nigeria has been contributed by outsiders. Many local Wikimedians lack knowledge on how to contribute, which this initiative seeks to rectify through training in uploading and proofreading texts in english and other relevant languages. Additionally, online sessions will be organized for the wider Hausa community, promoting skills development to preserve Northern Nigeria's literary heritage on Wikisource.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

I will spend one day introducing the participants to Wikisource, and then we'll have another day focused on training.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We initiated conversations in existing WhatsApp groups dedicated to Wikimedia projects. This ensured that community members were informed and could provide input on the proposal.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We’ve set up a dedicated WhatsApp group for participants, allowing for instant updates, discussions, and feedback during the training. This will help everyone stay connected and engaged throughout the process.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Ishaku Ajeje
User:Mlamido

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will utilize both laptops and smartphones for various tasks, enhancing their productivity and connectivity.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

I will continue engaging them via Whatsapp Group

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
