Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal. The Offa Open Knowledge Documentation Project is Two-month Wikimedia initiative aimed at addressing misinformation and digital underrepresentation of Offa, Kwara State, on the internet. Due to limited verifiable, structured, and updated information available online, the community continues to face inaccuracies and incomplete narratives about its institutions and infrastructure. This project will bridge that gap by documenting key places in Offa — including public and private schools, tertiary institutions, hotels, basic health centres, and other notable locations — and publishing accurate, verifiable content across Wikimedia platforms. High-quality photographs will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, structured data will be created or improved on Wikidata, and existing Wikipedia stub articles will be expanded with reliable references. Additionally, selected articles related to Offa will be translated into Yoruba Wikipedia to promote linguistic inclusion and improve access to knowledge for local language speakers. Through focused training, field documentation, and coordinated editing activities, this project will strengthen Offa’s digital representation, combat misinformation, and contribute sustainably to Wikimedia’s mission of providing free, open, and reliable knowledge.

  1. One guided documentation outing (photowalk) to capture images of schools, health centres, hotels, and other notable places in Offa.
  2. Two follow-up virtual editing sessions to support participants.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. We will share via our WhatsApp group and Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa Discussion page

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings. Participants will be informed through a combination of:

WhatsApp groups created specifically for the project

  • Social media announcements (LinkedIn, Facebook, and other relevant platforms)
  • Physical invitations within the Offa community, including educational institutions

During the project, communication and coordination will be maintained through WhatsApp for quick updates, virtual meeting platforms for online sessions, and on-wiki event pages to track contributions and ensure transparency.

While some participants have basic digital skills and smartphones, many may lack experience with Wikimedia platforms. The project will provide hands-on training on Wikipedia editing, Wikimedia Commons uploads, Wikidata contributions, and Yoruba translations. Participants will receive step-by-step guidance on referencing standards and free licensing. Internet access will be provided during sessions, and continuous mentorship will ensure quality, verifiable, and policy-compliant contributions throughout the one-month project. 6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? We will maintain ongoing engagement with participants through the Yoruba Wikimedia Fan Club Offa WhatsApp group.
