Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal. The JCI Ikeja Secondary Schools Debating Competition 2026 is an educational outreach initiative scheduled for March 15, 2026, in Ikeja, Lagos. The event will attract over 15 secondary schools and approximately 100–150 students.

This proposal seeks mini-grant support to integrate a Wikimedia awareness and introductory training session into the competition. A representative from Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria will introduce students to Wikipedia, how it works, and how young people can responsibly use and eventually contribute to free knowledge platforms.

The grant support requested will cover co-branded educational prizes (with Wikimedia logo), branded materials, and partial refreshment support for participants. This initiative aims to bridge the knowledge gap among young students and inspire future Wikimedia contributors.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? - A 5 minute introductory training on Wikipedia and free knowledge.

- A practical demonstration on how Wikipedia works.

- A guided walkthrough on how students can create accounts and begin contributing responsibly (for interested senior students).

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. We have informed members of Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria leadership.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings. Participants (secondary schools) will be officially invited through formal letters and direct communication from JCI Ikeja to school administrators.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify Yes. Experienced members of Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria will support the event.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Most students are familiar with using smartphones and the internet but may not have editing experience.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? Through dedicated groups and emails.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project? This project strategically introduces Wikimedia to young students at a formative stage. Since debate competitions require research and referencing, the integration of Wikipedia literacy aligns naturally with the event’s objectives.

Branding prizes with the Wikimedia logo will ensure sustained visibility beyond the event day and reinforce awareness of free knowledge principles.
