|status= proposed

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

For TransVisibility Month, Wiki for Human Rights Nigeria is planning a physical event in Lagos, where we will train about 10 LGBT+ Nigerians, especially trans individuals, on how Wikimedia works and how they can contribute, ranging from editing Wikipedia to uploading images to Commons and adding important data. As a user group, Wiki for Human Rights hopes this will encourage more trans individuals on Wikimedia to become contributors and active participants in the open-source knowledge ecosystem. These participants will gather at a designated location in Lagos for a one-day community training event to build a new crop of Nigerian editors who will contribute articles, photos, and data.

Project Plan

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One editathon training focused on LGBT+ Nigerians, with the main focus on trans visibility.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I will post on the discussion pages for Wikimedia Nigeria and the Wikimedia LGBT+ user page.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Through a social media campaign on the wiki for human rights X (formerly Twitter) account, the Instagram account, and the WhatsApp Community. Also, a partner organisation.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

  • Hadassahlove
  • Mnshop
  • Obinna Tony
  • Kaizenify has also been reached out and will support as the trainer

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

It will be made known that participants need access to a laptop to participate, as this will aid their personal understanding. We will be providing internet access.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We already have a WhatsApp group for the Wikimedia Nigerian LGBT+ user group. For those who are not already there, we will add them and brief them on upcoming virtual training opportunities to aid their editing and Wikimedia journey.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

A one-day training to help participants understand how to create and improve trans-related articles on Wikipedia, upload images to address the limited visual representation of trans identities, and enrich existing entries.
The physical event will also serve as a moment for the community's trans visibility celebration and togetherness, promoting trans visibility and helping participants deepen their sense of identity.
This project aims to improve trans visibility in Nigeria through open media platforms, especially as traditional media have often failed to provide unbiased reporting on trans individuals and their experiences.
