Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

Nigeria is currently in an election cycle, and politics has become the most discussed topic across social media platforms, news outlets, and communities. Despite the rise in political discussions in Nigeria, Political voices still remain underrepresented and poorly documented on Wikiquote.

Wikiquote: Spotlighting Political Voices is a Wikimedia initiative focused on documenting, preserving, and improving notable political and civic quotes from Nigerian political figures, activists, and public leaders on Wikiquote.

This project aims to empower contributors to responsibly document historical and present political quotes using reliable and verifiable sources. Participants will learn to create and improve Wikiquote entries, verify quotes, and citations on Wikiquote.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Physical Training: We will conduct a physical training session that will introduce participants to Wikiquote editing, guidelines, and how to properly source for resources.

Edit-a-thon: We will conduct an edit-a-thon to give participants hands-on experience in creating and improving Wikiquote entries.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We have made the Wikimedia Nigeria Community aware of our idea and can be accessed via: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#Wikiquote:Spotlighting_Nigeria%E2%80%99s_Political_Voices

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will create awareness by sharing event flyers on Wikimedia-related and youth groups, thereby reaching interested participants and our target audience.

We will also create a dedicated WhatsApp group that will serve our interested participants to promote easy communication, resource sharing, and address editing challenges.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:thesaleswiz Project lead

User:Tunmise123 Co-facilitator

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants have electronic gadgets: phones, tablets, and laptop devices to contribute through the project timeline, and we will support them with data reimbursements.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

To ensure continued participation and long-term impact beyond the project activities, we will utilize an established WhatsApp group to actively engage participants through mentorship and community support.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project is open to students, youths, young Wikimedians, researchers, writers, and Civic enthusiasts.
