Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Sirjat/Wiki Loves Africa 2025: Farming and Food Culture of Jigawa

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • Jigawa State is a rich agricultural hub where farming and pastoralism shape the daily lives of its people. The Hadejia River is vital, providing water for rice, wheat, and vegetable farming while also supporting fisheries that supply the lively Hadejia fish market. The state is home to vast herds of cattle, goats, and sheep, making it a center for dairy production, including the bustling Kasuwar Yan Nono (Milk Market). As part of Wiki Loves Africa, we will capture images of these farms, the hardworking farmers, vibrant markets, and the deep-rooted food culture of Jigawa, preserving the essence of its agricultural heritage on Wikimedia Commons.

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

This project consists of a series of photowalks followed by a single training and upload session. Led by User:Sirjat as the organizer and User:Usmanmaifada as the facilitator, the project will span three days of photowalks across Jigawa to capture images of farming activities, food processing, and local markets, including the Hadejia fish market and Kasuwar Yan Nono (Milk Market). It will conclude with a one-day physical meetup where participants will be trained on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring proper categorization and licensing, and will contribute the captured photographs to enrich free knowledge online.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We plan to do so by sharing the proposal on the Hausa Wikimedia User Group WhatsApp Group and Hausa Wikipedia Discussion Page. We will also notify key contributors and photographers while using social media to encourage participation and support.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will inform participants about the edit-a-thon through direct invitations and social media announcements. Communication will be maintained via WhatsApp groups, and in-person engagement to ensure they receive updates, reminders, and necessary guidance before and during the event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Usmanmaifada

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Some participants have the necessary equipment and skills to contribute high-quality content, while others may need support. To bridge this gap, we will provide hands-on guidance during the training session, ensuring participants understand how to capture and upload quality images. Additionally, we will offer access to shared cameras and smartphones for those without equipment, along with step-by-step tutorials on improving photography techniques and proper Wikimedia Commons uploads.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will engage participants through a WhatsApp group for follow-ups, learning resources, and support. We will encourage further contributions, track their uploads, recognize top contributors, and organize periodic online check-ins to sustain their involvement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project aims to not only document Jigawa’s rich agricultural and food culture but also to build local capacity in contributing to Wikimedia Commons. By engaging new and existing contributors, we hope to increase awareness of free knowledge and Creative Commons licensing in Northern Nigeria. The images captured will be valuable for illustrating Wikipedia articles and other Wikimedia projects. Additionally, we plan to collaborate with local photography and cultural organizations to enhance outreach and ensure long-term impact beyond the competition.
