From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The List of articles every Wikipedia should have serves as a roadmap for building a balanced and informative encyclopedia. It ensures that Wikipedias in every language provide readers with essential knowledge across various fields.

This project, titled *“Expanding Hausa Wikipedia with Core Knowledge Articles,”* seeks to enrich Hausa Wikipedia by creating and improving key foundational articles. The initiative will combine training, mentorship, and a writing contest to boost both content quality and editor engagement. A physical training will be held in Zaria, Kaduna State, to teach new contributors the basics of editing, while an online session will be organized to allow remote participation from other regions. Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen Hausa Wikipedia’s reliability and foster a sustainable editing community.

The project will include a one-day in-person training in Zaria, a one-day online session, and a one-month writing contest designed to create and enhance vital Hausa Wikipedia articles.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The proposal will be shared through the Hausa Wikimedians User Group and Zaria Wikimedians User Group WhatsApp platforms. These groups provide effective communication channels to reach active community members and potential participants.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Participants will be notified through Hausa and Zaria Wikimedians WhatsApp groups, Meta-Wiki project pages, and social media announcements. This multi-channel approach ensures wide participation and timely updates.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high-quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Some participants may need basic editing guidance or access to equipment. The project provides both physical and virtual training sessions, along with mentorship support. Computers and internet access will be made available when necessary to ensure everyone can contribute effectively.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

After the project, participants will remain connected through WhatsApp and Meta-Wiki spaces. They will be invited to future editing programs, mentorship opportunities, and contests to sustain their engagement and skill growth.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This initiative will significantly enhance Hausa Wikipedia’s content base by covering essential topics and ensuring higher information quality.
