- Wikidata Kano 2026 is a capacity-building project aimed at introducing new and existing Wikimedia contributors in Kano State to Wikidata and structured data editing. The project will consist of two days of in-person training and edit-a-thon activities, followed by a one-day online follow-up session. Participants will learn how to create and improve Wikidata items, add references, and contribute high-quality structured data related to notable Nigerian topics. The project seeks to strengthen the Wikidata community in Kano by recruiting new contributors and supporting existing editors to become active Wikidata contributors.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- The project will consist of a series of activities including two days of physical training and edit-a-thon sessions, followed by one online follow-up and mentorship session. Participants will receive practical training on Wikidata and contribute directly during the edit-a-thon
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
- The proposal will be shared with members of the Hausa Wikimedia User Group Nigeria community through WhatsApp groups, and relevant Wikimedia community communication platforms. Feedback from experienced community members will be incorporated into the project planning process.
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
- Participants will be recruited and informed through WhatsApp groups, social media platforms, university networks, and direct outreach. Communication before, during, and after the event will be carried out mainly through WhatsApp and email.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Most participants will have access to smartphones or laptops. The training is designed for beginners and will provide step-by-step guidance on Wikidata editing. Internet support will be provided during the physical sessions to ensure effective participation.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- Participants will be added to a dedicated WhatsApp support group where they can receive mentorship, ask questions, and continue contributing to Wikidata. The online follow-up session will also be used to address challenges and encourage continued participation.
7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This project aims to strengthen the Wikidata community in Kano by introducing structured data skills to new contributors and improving the quality and quantity of data related to Nigeria on Wikidata. The project will also help identify and nurture future community leaders and trainers.

Metrics tracking

- Wikimedia Foundation Outreach Dashboard Tool, attendance records, registration forms, and post-event follow-up monitoring. Detailed reports will be submitted after project completion.

- The project will be organized by User:Sumy IB with support from experienced Wikidata contributors and User:A Sulaiman Z. And User:Gwanki will be project's adviser and the online facilitor
