Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are vital in driving social progress, promoting equity, and addressing challenges in health, education, environment, and governance across Nigeria. With over 190,000 registered NGOs and about 10,000 actively operating nationwide[1], these organizations are essential pillars of community development. However, a Wikidata Query Service analysis shows that only 117 NGOs in Nigeria are currently documented on Wikidata[2], revealing a significant data gap that needs to be bridged.

This project aims to bridge this gap by documenting a verified structured database of NGOs in Nigeria on Wikidata. Through training sessions and data-a-thons, the project will equip participants with the skills to bridge the data gap.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Physical Training: The physical training will focus on training editors on basic editing skill on wikidata and how to create a complete and standard wikidata item for an NGO based in Nigeria. After which comes data a thon for the participants to apply the already learnt skills.
Virtual Training:The virtual training will serve as a follow-up to the physical session. It will provide additional guidance and mentorship to participants, helping them overcome any challenges faced while creating items on wikidata. It will also be an opportunity to monitor individual progress and share tips and resources for continued contributions.
Data-a-thon Contest: To encourage creativity and sustained participation, we will host a month online editing contest to bridge the data gap. Prizes will be awarded to the top contributors based on quality and impact of their submissions

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria about this proposal and shared initial details with community members who are active in outreach and Wikidata. I plan to promote the project through relevant social media channels, including WhatsApp and Facebook groups of Youths in Ogun State to attract interested participants and raise awareness about the event.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Online awareness: There will be online advocacy to participants through the uses of E fliers and posters to encourage participants to join the campaign and publicly inform them about the event
Use of Social media: we will be providing our previous WhatsApp groups to communicate with participants about when the event will start and be able to track the event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User: Sylvesterchukwu04 project lead

User: Ebubechukwu1 facilitator

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Our participants will be using their phone, tablet, laptop internet connectable devices for them to communicate

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will engage them with introducing them to other wikimedia projects and also encourage their to be active members of wikimedia user groups in Nigeria

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project supports the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy goals of achieving Knowledge Equity and Knowledge as a Service by improving representation and accessibility of Nigerian nonprofit data.
