This project will improve the documentation of major markets across Nigeria by enhancing their representation on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. It will combine nationwide online training with a physical training workshop in Kwara State, equipping participants with the skills to identify notable markets, collect and verify information from reliable sources, create or improve Wikidata items with structured data, and contribute freely licensed photographs to Wikimedia Commons. Participants from across Nigeria will engage virtually, while the in-person training in Kwara State will provide practical, hands-on learning and mentorship. The project aims to bridge knowledge gaps about Nigeria's commercial and cultural heritage by making reliable, structured, and openly accessible information available to a global audience. It will also strengthen the capacity of Wikimedia contributors in structured data, photography, and open knowledge, fostering sustainable contributions to the Wikimedia movement across the country.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? This project will consist of a series of training sessions and edit-a-thons. Participants will first receive hands-on training on contributing structured data to Wikidata, uploading freely licensed photographs to Wikimedia Commons, and adhering to Wikimedia policies.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. The proposal will be shared with relevant Wikimedia communities through the project Meta page, community mailing lists (where applicable), and WhatsApp groups used by Wikimedia contributors in Nigeria. We will also promote the project through social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, LinkedIn and Telegram to reach potential participants.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings. Participants will be informed through the project Meta page, Wikimedia Nigeria WhatsApp groups, Telegram channels, email, and social media platforms. Regular updates, training schedules, documentation guidelines, and event reminders will be shared through these channels before and during the project.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify Yes. The project will be led by experienced Wikimedia contributors with expertise in Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and community training. The project lead and facilitators will provide mentorship throughout the project. Their Wikimedia usernames is stated below

She has participated in many campaigns with excellent performances User: Bamjos : He is a certified Nigerian Wikimedian.Bamjos has facilitated and served as a jurist for several Wikimedia campaigns and community initiatives. He was the Facilitator and Jurist for the Voice for Change: Documenting African Women Activists for International Women's Day project and also served as Facilitator and Jurist for the Yorùbá Climate Open Knowledge Initiative Campaign. Through these roles, he has gained extensive experience in participant training, edit-a-thon coordination, contribution tracking, and content quality assessment.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them? Yes Most participants have access to smartphones or laptops for editing and uploading content. The project will provide practical training on Wikidata editing, Wikimedia Commons uploads, and field photography. Participants who need additional support will receive mentoring during the training and edit-a-thons to ensure they can make quality contributions.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? Participants will remain connected through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, where they will receive follow-up support, editing opportunities, mentorship, and invitations to future Wikimedia activities. We will also encourage them to continue documenting markets and other notable places across Nigeria and recognize outstanding contributors to sustain engagement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project? This project addresses a significant knowledge gap by improving the documentation of Nigeria's major markets on Wikimedia platforms. It will preserve important aspects of Nigeria's commercial and cultural heritage through structured data and freely licensed images while building the capacity of contributors to continue enriching Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons beyond the project's duration.

Metrics tracking

How do you plan to track your project metrics? (do not create a metrics dashboard until your project has been approved for funding) Metrics Tracking

Project metrics will be tracked using the Wikimedia Programs & Events Dashboard after the project is approved for funding. We will also use Wikidata query tools to monitor the number of items created and improved, Wikimedia Commons categories to track uploaded photographs and their usage, and attendance registers to record participant engagement. Throughout the project, we will maintain regular progress reports, document contributions, and evaluate outcomes against the project's targets to ensure accurate reporting and accountability.

Winners will be selected based on the quality and impact of their contributions rather than the number of edits alone. The scoring criteria will include the number of valid Wikidata items created or improved,the quality and completeness of structured data added, the number and quality of freely licensed photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, proper categorization and licensing of uploaded files, and adherence to Wikimedia's policies and project guidelines. Each new item created on wikidata with reference will earn 4 points, existing wikidata items with at least 5 statement with reference will earn 2 points. Images uploaded on Wikimedia common will earn 2 points. All submissions will be reviewed by the organizing team to ensure they meet the project's quality standards before winners are announced.

The project will be organized by an experienced team of Wikimedia contributors with expertise in Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, project coordination, and community training. The organizing team will be responsible for project planning, participant recruitment, training, field documentation, technical support, monitoring contributions, judging the contest, and preparing the final project report.

Participants will contribute using their own smartphones or laptops for editing and uploading content. The project will utilize existing Wikimedia platforms, including Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Meta-Wiki, for documentation, collaboration, and reporting. Support from the Wikimedia community will include mentorship from experienced editors and volunteers who will guide participants throughout the project.

Apart from the requested Wikimedia Local Fund grant, the project is not expected to receive additional external funding. Any in-kind support, such as volunteer time, mentoring, and the use of personal devices, will be provided by the organizing team and participants.
