Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The Nigerian movie industry, also known as Nollywood, is the second largest film producer in the world. However, despite its prominence, data on Nigerian movies in Wikidata remains incomplete and underdeveloped. According to the results of a SPARQL query, there are currently 896 Nigerian movies documented on Wikidata. You can access the query result here. While this number highlights the existing efforts to document Nigerian cinema, it also points to significant gaps that must be addressed to ensure comprehensive data coverage.

The project aims to improve the representation of Nigerian cinema and films on Wikidata by providing editors with the skills to create, edit, and analyze movie-related data. The project will target both new and experienced editors, focusing on building a structured database of films, actors, directors, production companies, and other relevant movie industry. Participants will gain technical skills in editing wikidata using SPARQL querying and recoin tools in contributing to a more enriched and structured data of cinematic knowledge.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will conduct two online training sessions and one physical event focusing on different aspects of movie data, such as creating and editing movie items, linking wikipedia articles on Nigeria cinemas to wikidata items, and querying data. After which a two weeks editathon would commence.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the Wikimedia Nigeria community about my project via the talk page [1]

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Participants will be informed about the edit-a-thon through the designated whatsapp platform created for the project. E-fliers would be posted to various Wikimedia platforms for awareness to targeted communities such as Nigerian movie fans, film students, and Wikidata enthusiasts.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Ebubechukwu1

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, Participants have the equipment and Skills needed to contribute to the success of this project.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will set up a follow-up support system, including a dedicated messaging group and post-event webinars to help participants continue their editing and technical learning journey. We will also encourage editors to stay active in Wikidata by engaging them in future movie-related projects.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Closing these gaps is crucial for preserving the rich heritage of Nigerian cinema and increasing its visibility both locally and internationally. By improving the data on Wikidata, we ensure that Nigerian movies are well-documented, searchable, and accessible to audiences worldwide, including researchers, filmmakers, and cinephiles. This project aims to contribute to the digital preservation of Nigerian culture and film history while also making the data more user-friendly for various communities.
