Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • The Esan people as an ethnic group have a significant population in Lagos due to migration for economic, education and social opportunities. However, as Wikimedia movement gain ground in Nigeria there is still low participation among minority groups, Esan people particularly in the country. This project aim to introduce Esan speakers in Lagos through training sessions and outreach programs that introduce them to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. These efforts is geared towards familiarizing them with Wikipedia editing skills and content creation that will be useful in future training on contributing to local language Wiki in the Incubator. Empowering local language speakers to contribute actively to the open knowledge ecosystem.

The Wikimedia UG Nigeria community have been notified on their talk page.

This event has been discussed with Esan Professionals Association - Lagos Branch and Esan Sons and Daughters Lagos, both Esan centric association eagerly looking forward to proposed awareness and training.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

participants are expected to join the training with their smartphone and laptop

A dedicated WhatsApp group will be created to engage participants during and after the project

The long time goal for this project is to recruit Esan language speakers and writers to support the development of Esan Language Wikipedia in the incubator and building sustainable Wikimedia community.
