  • The *Wikipedia Awareness and Training in Nguru* initiative aims to promote digital literacy and enhance the understanding of open knowledge platforms within the Nguru community. This project will focus on introducing Wikipedia as a valuable tool for accessing, contributing to, and verifying information. It will empower participants with the necessary skills to engage actively with Wikipedia by editing articles, creating content, and adhering to its standards of neutrality and verifiability.

Objectives: 1. Increase Awareness: Educate the public about the purpose, scope, and benefits of Wikipedia and open knowledge online. 2. Skill Development: Provide hands-on training on how to navigate Wikipedia, edit existing articles, and contribute new content. 3. Cultural Representation: Encourage the local community to contribute knowledge relevant to Nguru, including cultural, historical, and linguistic aspects that are underrepresented on Wikipedia.

Target Audience: - Local educators, students, and youth groups - Academics and professionals with expertise in various fields - Cultural custodians and community leader

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

- Workshops and Training Sessions: Conduct in-person workshops in Nguru, focusing on Wikipedia editing skills, content creation, and proper referencing techniques.

- Content Focus: Encourage the documentation of local history, traditions, language, and notable personalities from Nguru, increasing regional representation on Wikipedia.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have let them know by reaching out to them through social media channels, i.e WhatsApp.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

I will invite the participants during Awareness and some other participants will know via WhatsApp groups and phone calls

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)

Yes they will use devices mostly Phone and Laptops

I will create WhatsApp group for Nguru Wikimedians

This project will contribute to closing content gaps on Wikipedia, while empowering the Nguru community with the skills needed for active participation in the global information ecosystem.
