Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikipedia Awareness follow up, University of Benin/Nigeria Films and Cinema
Project summary
[edit]Briefly summarize your project proposal.
- Following the impactful awareness campaign on Wikipedia with focus on art and feminism at the University of Benin, my team and i will deepen this engagement with a dedicated follow up project focused on Nigerian films and cinema. This project aims to build on the skills acquired in the first session, fostering continuity and solidifying knowledge within the community. By concentrating on articles related to Nigerian cinema, including films, actors, directors, and notable cinematic events, this project will broaden participants' editing skills while enriching Wikimedia with content that represents Nigeria's cultures.
Our aim is to strengthen participants' skills in effectively writing and contributing quality articles on Wikipedia. We observed that, while participants created a considerable number of Wikidata items in the previous session, fewer Wikipedia articles were developed. This highlighted a gap in their comfort and proficiency with Wikipedia article creation compared to editing on Wikidata.

Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
On the first day, participants will be introduced to Wikipedia and its sister projects, including Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary, and Wikisource. The session will highlight the purpose and unique features of each platform, emphasizing their roles in the global knowledge ecosystem. A special focus will be placed on the topic of Nigerian film and cinema, guiding participants on how to find credible citations and relevant data to support this subject area. Attendees will learn the basics of editing on Wikipedia, including creating and modifying articles, and will engage in hands-on practice to apply these skills effectively.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
- I have informed the wikimedia Nigeria about my project proposal Below is the link
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
- After the first event, we created a WhatsApp group, which has been instrumental in keeping participants informed and engaged. We’ll use this platform to announce the upcoming edit-a-thon and share updates. Since registration slots for the physical event were limited, only a select group could attend in person, but almost everyone from the WhatsApp group participated in the online session. Additionally, we have participants' email addresses, which will serve as our official means of reaching out to previous attendees and ensuring everyone stays informed about the edit-a-thon and other opportunities.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify
- user:Shekinahglory2000 (Project Lead): I am an experienced editor on both Wikipedia and wikidata sisters project. A student at the university of Benin and I will be leading this project and training the editors during the physical training.
User:Emmanuella643 (co- facilitator) she will be providing training on editing Wikipedia. Leveraging her expertise, she will guide participants through the nuances of editing Wikipedia articles. This includes teaching best practices for creating and editing articles, adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines and standards, and effectively using its editing tools. Her insights will help participants understand the editorial process, enhance their contributions, and navigate the complexities of maintaining high-quality Wikipedia articles.
User:Thesaleswiz (Communication And Logistics) : also an experienced editor, having over a thousand edits in the wikimedia movement , he has Won varies prizes across Nigeria campaigns which include winners of the January edition of Art+feminism campaign , he will be in charge of the Communication and logistics during the course of the campaign.
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Yes, our target participants have internet enabled devices such as smartphones, iPads, laptops, and tablets that allow them to effectively contribute to the goals of the campaign project.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
We will actively engage our platforms by sharing updates on different community initiatives and events. We’ll also familiarize participants with additional sister projects like Wikibooks and Wikivoyage. Furthermore, we’ll motivate them to join the Wikimedia Nigeria community to broaden their awareness of activities within Nigeria and internationally.
7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This follow up event helps to strengthen the skills of participants from the previous awareness, helping them build on what they learned and become established contributors within the Wikimedia movement. Our goal also include making them feel confident and engaged in editing across Wikipedia and its sister projects, growing their expertise and commitment to sharing knowledge in the Wikimedia community.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Just like in our last event, we will keep our platforms active and engaging by regularly updating participants on various community projects and events. We’ll also introduce them to other sister projects, such as Wikibooks and Wikivoyage, and encourage them to join the Wikimedia Nigeria general community to broaden their exposure to both national and global activities. Please include the following targets (only those applicable to your project):
- Number of events - 1
- Number of participants - 20
- Number of new editors - 5
- Number of of articles created - 80 Wikipedia and 80 wikidata

Strong support -As Nigerians, our rich diversity and vibrant cultures find their truest expression through film and creative art. This project is a great opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s culture and stories on Wikipedia by amplifying them to a global audience. It will also empowers participants the more, to contribute to the Wikimedia ecosystem and shape the information landscape, since it builds on previous campaign.
