The impact of edit-a-thon on emerging Wikimedia communities’ growth, like Taraba Wikimedia Community, is far reaching and can therefore never be underestimated.
This project, Building Capacity and Advancing Skills: Wikipedia and WikiCommons Training and Edit-A-Thon for Taraba Wikimedians, aimed to
- Equip the Taraba State Wikimedians with advanced skills and techniques on how to effectively and professionally perform editorial activities on Wikipedia and upload high-quality, relevant content on WikiCommons.
- Bridge the content gap by capturing and providing free access to Taraba’s rich natural landscapes and portraying her cultural diversity, and also ensuring proper coverage of people, institutions, and places from Taraba that passed the notability criteria.
- Catalyze engagement and activeness of the Taraba Wikimedia community members and ensure the community editors got all it takes to contribute freely and consistently.
Through organizing this event, which involves Wikipedia and WikiCommons, the community will be well engaged with the drive to keep contributing to the world's largest repository of knowledge, thereby bridging the content gap as well as sustaining the Taraba Wikimedia Community.

Timeline of activities

- Online Session: On the 6th of December, participants will have the online session.
- In-Person Sessions: On the 7th and 8th of December, advanced Wikipedia editing skills and techniques as well as uploading high-quality, relevant contents on WikiCommons will be taught to the participants physically.
- Edit-a-thon: Following the in-person sessions, a 21-day Edit-a-Thon (9th December to 29th December, 2024) will be held. Participants will actively create and improve Hausa and English Wikipedia articles as well as upload contents on WikiCommons.
- Winners announcement: on the 31st of December, 2024, winners of the edit-a-thon will be announced via the community WhatsApp group, and the prizes will be awarded to them.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
The project aims to have three sessions (one online session and two offline sessions) and an edit-a-thon.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
We will utilize the Wikimedia Taraba Community WhatsApp group for proper communication.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)

User:Yahuzaishat, an indigene and resident of Taraba State, will take on the role of project lead. He is a graduate of the 2023/4 Organizer’s Lab Cohort. He had the privilege of leading the Wiki Loves Earth Taraba 2024, Wikipedia Training for Taraba Wikimedians and facilitating the Wikimedia Awareness at Pen Resource University and Wikimedia Awareness in Ummah College of Health Sciences and Technology.
User:Gwanki, is a seasoned Wikipedian with a track record of excellence contributions. He is an administrator of the Hausa Wikipedia, and has over the years established and trained many editors who are doing well in the movement. In this project, he will serve as an online facilitator for Wikipedia.
User:Bembety is a highly experienced and accomplished editor with a profound understanding of Wikimedia projects. Throughout his career, Bembety has been actively involved in numerous impactful Wikimedia initiatives. He has lead the Wikimedia Awareness in Ummah College of Health Science and Technology and has successfully participated in various awareness programs, including the Gombe edit-a-thon, where he contributed significantly to promoting the use of Wikimedia platforms. With his extensive expertise, he will serve as an online facilitator for WikiCommons.
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
Yes, the participants have the basic knowledge. In order to support them, I, along with the other team members will give them hands-on and first-class knowledge on advance editing and uploading.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
Taraba Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group will be used for that.
7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
This project is broadly aimed at bridging the content gap and empowering as well as sustaining the Wikimedia Community in Taraba State.

The Outeached Dashboard will be used to track contributions and assess performance of the participants.

- Provision of banner, e-flyers, and tags = ₦20,000
- Renting of a Hall for the two physical sessions (40,000 x 2) = ₦80,000
- Fueling of an alternative power supply = ₦10,000
- Refreshment for participants (2,000 x 20 = 40,000 x 2 sessions): ₦80,000
- Branded T-shirt and cap for the project lead: ₦7,000
- Prizes for the edit-a-thon winners (Wikipedia ₦25,000 and WikiCommons ₦25,000) = ₦50,000
