WMF Comments[edit]

Hi Biplab Anand and all the Maithili Wikimedians User Group team. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this report. We highly appreciate your effort in facilitating this very important platform for the Wikipedians of Nepal. I reviewed your report and have some comments and questions I'll be happy to clarify.

Program

  • You mentioned a session about Gender Gap and Outreach that included discussing various solutions. Could you share what kind of solutions? I'm interested to know if there was any indication of participants adopting and implementing some of the solutions presented.
  • We welcome sharing any more information and interesting points raised during other sessions. Especially regarding Inspiring Young Contributors and leadership.

Team's effort

  • Publishing an open call for committee members is a really good idea, and a great opportunity to engage with new volunteers and newcomers.
  • Nice participation rate for the monthly calls! Would be nice to calculate the volunteering hours as an indication for 'in-kind' donations. This is not a requirement, but a good way to evaluate the resources and efforts invested for future events.
  • Was the Volunteers team consisted only of Wikimedia volunteers? How many of them were newcomers? And what happened after the event? Are they still active?

Goals and outcomes

  • The outcomes you mentioned on the table, are actions, and not scalable outcomes. For the sake of reporting and evaluating, we are looking to see high quality outcomes. Like on the Achievements table, so I will refer to those.
  • Develop technical and leadership skills - do you have any indication participants used those skills successfully after the conference?
  • Newbie Wikipedians - How many newcomers were at the event? Have you had any follow up on their activities since?
  • Discussion on Development of new language projects - Have you had any progress with that?
  • Did you managed to learn about the WMF resources, and to set up a task force team, as you mentioned on the Community input section of the grant proposal?

Learning

  • Actively reaching out to female participants was definitely the right, and the expected thing to do in that case and we appreciate you not just making peace with the fact that you haven't received female applications. Thank you for that!
  • Thank you for sharing your thoughts and conclusions. This will be very helpful for any future grant recipients.

Next steps Are you still considering submitting a grant proposal to host the second edition of the conference? If so, please note that the next round proposal deadline will be September 9, and I'll be happy to help.

As for your financial report - all documentation was approved.

Thank you again for the work you have done. Hope to hear back from you soon so we can learn more from your experience in hosting the 2018 Wikicamp Nepal event and so we can finalize the grant. All the best CAlmog (WMF) (talk) 22:12, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks CAlmog (WMF) for your suggestions and comments. Please review my response below-

Program

  • Well, Sushma & Srijana duly presented a session regarding Gender Gap and Outreach at Wikicamp Nepal 2018. Their presentation is basically focused on to bring women contributors from Wikipedia Education Program, Edit-a-thons and Wikimedia Outreach Programs solely initiated and organized by experienced women wikip(m)edians from the community. Yes, one of our community Wikipedian Nilam organized Women Participation in Wikipedia to bring female contributors.
  • In fact, each session was mixed package of positivity and space of learning. Regarding, Inspiring Young Contributors and Leadership session, it was presented by Innocentbunny. The motive of the presentation session is all about divert the energy of young wikipedians to contribute and take the responsibility of the community to move it forward with their immense energy. The session also showed the way to recruit such youths from Wikimedia Outreach Programs.

Team's effort

  • Thanks for the compliment.
  • Thanks again for your comment, We will definitely keep this in mind to implement this advice in future events.
  • Yes most of the volunteers came from our previous Wikimedia outreach events. One of our Volunteer members Sandeep Raut organized a Wikipedia Education Program in Birtanagar. There are few volunteers who is actively contributing to Wikipedia but the level of support is still with us from all volunteer members.

Goals and outcomes

  • Yeah! as we have already mentioned that our targeted measures of success on the proposal, our team has discussed on all the points what we have targeted and what we have achieved so far. For point 1) We have targeted a total of 30 participants from diverse and under-represented Wikipedia communities of Nepal. As a success, we managed 46 participants. 2) We have targeted a total of at least 5 female participants. As a success, we managed 6 female participants. 3) We have targeted one blog-post on WMF blog portal. As a success, news on 6 online news portal, promotion via social media and one draft. 4) We have received 28 feedback about conference experience, learning, thoughts and opinions. 5) Meeting with Community and UG representatives has organized. 6) New communication channels has established for better coordination.

If we have to point out high quality outcomes then they are: - Participants are more skilled and active since then. They are organizing various events on their own such as WACN, Wiki Loves Birds, Wikipedia Education Program in Biratnagar, Wiki-a-thon, Women Participation in Wikipedia, Educational institution Photowalk and Edit-a-thon and many more.
- Doteli Wikimedians User Group has taken step for their recognition.
- Since then Wikimedia movement is frequently developing in Nepal.

  • There were few participants whose interests pushed them to implement towards building their technical and leadership skills. AFAICT, two members from our community Tulsi and BRPever are planning to host a Wikimedia Technical Program to share their skill and knowledge with the community members.
  • There were around 10 new comer participants at the event. We are in touch with most of the wikipedians and they are doing quite well in their respective Wikipedia.
  • Yes, we are working with the Marwari language speakers to contribute on mwr incubator projects but the development was very little. We are hopeful and collaborating with them.
  • Well we are discussing it with our community members and I hope to create a task force team very soon.

Learning

  • You are most welcome. We have done and implemented all the ideas to bring the female participation in Wikicamp Nepal to learn and collaborate with us.
  • Thank you very much.

Next steps

  • The planning and discussion was started a few months back and we are working on it to organize the second edition of Wikicamp Nepal conference.

Thanks for the consideration--Biplab Anand (Talk) 16:45, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
