Feedback on your Midpoint Report[edit]

Hello Misaochan,

Apologies for taking this long to record in writing the acceptance of this report, along with my comments. I'm recording them now, and am happy to follow up again in person to give you additional support as you aim to wrap up your Final Report. Thank you for all your work on this project!

  • I want to comment on your summary section, primarily with an eye to your Final Report. What you have written suffices for your Midpoint. However, when you write your Final, I encourage you to use your Summary section, especially, to give your audience a sense of the impact of what you accomplished. So for example, don't just say you fixed bugs, which could mean a million different things, but rather, highlight the difference it makes that you fixed the particular bugs you did (improved speed of upload, for example). It can help to imagine that you are writing a one paragraph overview for a newspaper in which you are seeking to help a non-initiated audience really get the impact and the value of your project. Why does it matter? What are you proud of about what you accomplished? Think of the summary as the place where you want to brag. Not everyone will read the entirely of your report, so you want to think about what you most want people to get about this project if they were just to read this section and nothing else.
  • I really appreciate the care you've taken to archive and link to your work so that others can follow what you did. It's a good idea, as you've done in your Midpoint, to link to all of the resources you've created as you talk about them in your narrative. In your Final Report, in addition to links in your narrative, please provide an exhaustive list of links to everything you've created (both archival process pieces and final product pieces) in the Project Resources section.
  • Love that you are including screenshots. It is lovely to be able to see how the app interface looks to users.
  • Please take care in your Final Report to keep an eye toward a non-technical audience. I definitely want you to communicate what you need to for other tech folks seeking information about your project. However, remember that non-tecchies might be confused, for example, by a sentence like "Several bugfixes have also been implemented to prevent {{Location|null}} and {{Location|0,0}} from being sent." Frankly, I'm not sure what that means. If you can add sentences that clarify what that means in everyday language (maybe a follow-up sentence like, "This fix makes sure that the coordinates field on Commons is only populated when coordinates are actually known, rather than populating it with an error or null message when coordinates aren't known." Of course, I am making that up because I'm not sure what it means, so you should tweak as needed.)
  • Since the tutorial piece was a matter of particular importance to the committee as a contingency for funding this project, I'm wanting to make sure that piece doesn't get dropped. If you haven't done so recently, I hope you will check in with Pine about the status of his project, LearnWiki. He may not have made enough progress by the time your project wraps for you to be able to rely on his help. So, I would like you to have a back-up plan in that case.
  • Glad to hear you are thinking about next steps for this project. Let's be sure to check in about your plans for a renewal proposal. It's good to co-think about that early on, ideally before you finalize your Final Report. We can set up a check-in about that soon, if that's desirable!

Warm regards,

Hi Marti (WMF),
Thanks for the feedback, it really helps to know what I'm doing right and what can be improved upon. :) Re: the tutorial, this has already been completed after the mid-point report was written, based on the first draft of the LearnWiki Commons script that Pine sent me. I took the liberty of using the draft with his permission, as I figured that once the final script was out we could make further modifications if needed. I wrote about it on this blog post, with accompanying screenshots, but I am happy to discuss it further if needed.
I greatly appreciate the suggestions re: my summary and use of technical terms, and will try to improve on that in the final report. I would love to schedule a check-in to discuss our next steps, and will email you with my available times.
Cheers! Misaochan (talk) 08:25, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
