October 11 Proposal Deadline: Reminder to change status to 'proposed'

The deadline for Project Grant submissions this round is October 11th, 2016. To submit your proposal, you must (1) complete the proposal entirely, filling in all empty fields, and (2) change the status from "draft" to "proposed." As soon as you’re ready, you should begin to invite any communities affected by your project to provide feedback on your proposal talkpage.

Goal doesn't include increase of female participation

The goal of this grant currently doesn't include a passage about increasing the amount of female editors. Was that a conscious choice? If so, what's the reason? ChristianKl (talk) 17:44, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

This is a very good question. The project is included in the francophone project les sans pages, which did result in an increase in both female participation and women biographies. We have experienced quite a lot of hostility last year, but realized that bringing some subjects for discussion with the community does help to increase interest for the gender gap, recognition from senior francophone contributors and tangible results. Just look at the new project paga created after Esino Lario: the number of senior contributors invilved after the conference on non sexist language in Paris raised much more than in the last year Let's fill teh gender gap project.

So yes, the issues are linked, and furthermore, the participants to our projects are asking for this to happen, as they have been confronted with extrreme behaviors when trying to feminize some terms which are sourced in the medias. The agressivity and violence involved means we believe that keeping the conversation on the agenda by various means (bot, online manual, conferences, showing up at events) is crucial in the francophone community.

This is why a transport budget is needed: we need to come to wikipediannevents, to participate to show that the gender gap is not something couter productive and there is a way to create win-wins. --Nattes à chat (talk) 10:00, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for proposal but I have a number of questions/comments:

• It is not clear for me what you mean by "feminization of masculine terms"? Do you mean replacement of "actor" with "actress" if the person is female?

Yes that is exactly the case.

• If the above is true, I think it is contrary to the recent trends of using gender-neutral language.

Well things are a little different in English (which is allready much more neutral than French) than in French, and using the term "epicène" is exactly that: using neutral language whenever it is possible (for eg "lectorat" instead of "lecteurs et lectrices"). The problem in French is that some people masculine as a generic neutral, whereas the tendency in French is towards feminization as a way of not making women invisible, and producing a more inclusive language. Having neutral pronouns (some writers are starting to use them, but hey have to be invented) would cause an uproar even worse as french is binary in its linguistic and historic structure. The feminisation is a step therefore towards gender de-discrimination. We want to offer the means to people who want to use such methods to have ressources to do so, as this is not the case at the moment on wikipedia.

• Please, remove "Expand your idea" leftover section from the proposal.

• The total budget is USD 6800. However in the budget section you also mention software development with the attributed cost of 7000.

Ok, then we need to clarify: this is in kind contribution by volunteers which will be very consequent, so I have put an indicative figure there. The volunterring team is willing to put that much amount of personal engagement if WMF takes in charge travel costs. We will need to promote the produced material because we want to achieve media coverage and present these tools to the wiki{p|m}edian community wherever possible (convention, wikimania, conferences) and to the outside world, because it will give a positive image of our movement as one movement which does tackle gender gap issues with an agile method, and not by just measuring / reporting the problem.

• The project duration is unclear.

The project duration would be one year from the start of the funding decision (writing a francophone manual using existing rng)egional and national ressources is time consuming and requires regular discussions with regional representatives)

• The proposal, in my opinion, lacks clear measures of success ecept manual publication, which appears to be only tangible result.

Well the concrete results would be the publishing and promoting the manual online, and the developemnt of the bot, but there are qualitative results that could be achieved in the fact that we plan to present the project whenever possible,like we did at the French wikiconvention in August. This generated online support for the project les sans pagEs (in fact we include this projetc in les sans pagEs).We believe if we keep the conversation going it will help gender gap issues in the long run. However it is hard to divide precisely the impact of all les sans pagEs projects separately, I do agree. We have a more systemic approach.--Nattes à chat (talk) 09:52, 24 November 2016 (UTC)
