This proposal as I understand it is: Remove the veil of anonymity by demanding documentation that exposes their legal identity in response to having both noted an issue and the actor.

In that view it would be problematic and incomplete for various reasons I will try to succinctly raise below.

  • Registration information and identity information aren't captured and cannot be compared.
  • Documentation provided by an editor cannot be verified against a held piece of data such as a credit card transaction. Or without sending the user registered mail.
  • Documentation may not be in English
  • Documentation would be received, stored and judged by whom in the structure of wikimedia and editors.
  • Security of documentation received.
  • Resolution of conflicts of data received matching more than two individuals.
  • Resolution of documentation provided that is reported as stolen or otherwise of questionable provenance.
  • Sensitivity to editors in countries that have unsafe environments that place individuals at risk.
  • Abuse of identity request process.
  • Does wikimedia desire to become holder of personal information in addition to authentication information, this concentration of data will attract attacks.
  • Isn't sufficiently an automatic process that it would become a line item in budgets to support.

Far too easy to abuse[edit]

On a project this big, there would be at least a few people who'd use this to commit crimes.

Say there's an editor you don't like. All you have to do is claim "S/he's harassing me!" Boom, now you know where they live and can go break into their house. It would be Wikipedia-sanctioned doxing.

And let's say the person really was performing on-Wiki harassment, telling their victims where they live still invites retaliation. Darkfrog24 (talk) 15:34, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
