Feel free to comment on the Wikipedia likes Galactic exploration for Posterity at the talk page. Thank you for all of the support at the Lighting Talks during the Wiki Conference USA 2014. Geraldshields11 (talk) 18:05, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I rewrote the project for 2015 and the link is at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015

Small changes suggested[edit]

I like the vision here! Here are a couple of suggestions -- econterms (talk) 00:47, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Many languages. Phrasing in the proposal suggested the digital copy would have English Wikipedia only. But we can explicitly include Wikipedia content from many languages, and make it a more global achievement.
  • Refer to earlier example. Voyager space probes sent by NASA included a plate with carved human figures and a phonograph-type record so that if extraterrestrials ever saw it they could understand what humans looked like and sounded like. This prior analogue is worth citing in this proposal.
Dear @econterms, I adopted your suggestions. Geraldshields11 (talk) 17:52, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Friendship 3 specifications and KEO satellite[edit]

For further information, you can download a 3-page Word© document (English version) on KEO'S technical feasibility, an extract from a paper, presented by Aerospatiale at the 48th International Astronautical Congress, Turin, October 1997 see long now project

Dear Editor, Thank you for the information. I appreciate it. I found a link at http://www.keo.org/uk/uk/technik.html that seems to have the information you reference. Geraldshields11 (talk) 13:36, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requests for clarification[edit]

  • I see this sentence: "I got permission to be the cultural payload specialist for the purposes of sending Wikipedia into outer space." -- Who gave permission? Who received permission? Is a citation possible?
  • "As of 4 May 2015, I joined the team of Lunar Mission One." -- Can it say what the substantive meaning of "joining" is?
  • Friendship 3 is discussed at length. Is that the likely first platform? If we can say that, the project statement would be more clearly specific and focused and doable.

Dear @Econterms: To answer your questions:
  1. IRL at a meetup, I asked James Hare and he specifically said yes to this and the title. I can not remember which meetup but ask Slowking4. He got a laugh when he overheard James and my conversation. WikiDC did not put a press release out but it would be nice.
  2. I persuaded Lunar Mission One to get copies of Wiki/Wiki Commons for their mission. I put them in touch with Wikimedia Foundation.
  3. No, Friendship 3 is really a stretch goal that probably will not happen in my lifetime.
A more refined version is at Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015.
Thank you for your feedback. My best regards, Geraldshields11 (talk) 19:08, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Consider an Individual Engagement Grant![edit]

Hi, @Geraldshields11 and GlamChem: I want to remind you that the deadline for the current open call for Individual Engagement Grant proposals is September 29. If you are interested in applying for funding for this idea, there is still time to make it into a grant proposal. The idea is well-developed, and could be eligible for funding. To get started, go the main page of the idea, and look for the collapsible section starting with, "Does this idea need funding?" All you need to do is follow the instructions there to apply. Let me know if you need any help making your grant request. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:37, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I took your advice and create a new proposal for 2015. Please see the idea at Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015. Please post your suggestions on the talk page and please feel free to edit the idea and join the project. Geraldshields11 (talk) 18:48, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cool project[edit]

I just want to say this is a very cool idea. I hope you succeed. PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:20, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

stability of storage medium[edit]

an SD card is not a good choice for long term data preservation. flash memory is made of many tiny capacitors holding electric charge. they can be depolarized by radiation and will slowly deplete their charge over time, causing a loss of data. i've seen storage time estimates quoted anywhere from 10 to 90 years in ideal conditions, but nobody really knows. in space on a satellite undergoing temperature fluctuations and various types of radiation is far from ideal conditions. the problem gets even worse with higher density memory.

you may wish to look into M-disc (25GB) or using a focused ion beam to etch glass or silicon, such as was done with the rosetta disk, but with higher data density. hopefully you could do better than 13500 pages on a disk by using a smaller feature size and digital text encoding. their disk was intended to be viewed under an optical microscope, but we have much better microscopes and so would anyone who found your space wikipedia.
