  5. I support the purpose in general, however, like Kiril above, I would like to ensure on the best pricing.

Rollup banners[edit]

370 USD seems awfully expensive for a roll-up banner in my experience, where a decent one can be had for about a third of that. Can you provide some more detail of what it is you're ordering exactly and why the price is so high? I'm supportive of the idea of buying quality materials that won't need to be replaced at further expense at a later date, but that cost does look alarmingly high to me. Craig Franklin (talk) 10:25, 22 October 2014 (UTC).[reply]

The banners we are looking for are 200 cm by 85 cm printed on both sides. And I believe this is the right price for the banners we are looking for regarding size and quality. I realise it may seem costly, but we're in Denmark and prices are rather elevated here. -HenrikKbh (talk) 14:33, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, can you advise then what the target quality is? I know we paid significantly less than that here in Australia for banners recently, and we are also an expensive country. But on a quick back of the envelope calculation, I could have two of these printed here, and shipped to you via air mail cheaper than it would be to have them made in Denmark. That doesn't seem right to me. Craig Franklin (talk) 06:44, 23 October 2014 (UTC).[reply]
We are looking for banners in a professional quality, i.e. easily maintainable, fireprotected, something that won't break down easily, something which can be used outdoors.

So the breakdown is:

Banners DKK 3190 /USD 543
Delivery DKK 130 /USD 22
VAT 25% DKK 830 /USD 141
Total DKK 4150 /DKK 703

The banners are: Size 200 * 85 printed on both sides on PP-folio 250 my

Prices found here:

I am sorry for the USD 40 difference, I found another price when I checked last time. -HenrikKbh (talk) 15:06, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the cost of the banners seem quite high, even for my standards (Belgium - no cheap country either). I see you selected double sided banners, that probably increases the cost. I support the grant request, but I would just ask you to get some more quotes (did you try Vistaprint etc)? MADe (talk) 08:39, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeap... we have printed recently 6 rollup-banners for 450 USD... Poland is probably much cheaper than Belgium, but anyway - we can print it and send it to Belgium as well :-) Polimerek (talk) 22:14, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Some more quotes:

Vistaprint apparently doesn't make doublesided banners.

What are the implications about ordering the banners from another country i.e. another Wikimedia chapter, in for instance Australia or Poland and have them send to Denmark, when talking about the grant ? -HenrikKbh (talk) 16:19, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, although I get that prices in Denmark are obviously higher, I second the concerns about the price for the goods and support the idea of manufacturing abroad where it would be cheaper. Also, I wonder about the bothsideness of the banner - from the experiences I know that in the most majority of uses it stands the way it is visible only from the single side.

Also, when is the first need of the banners and magnetic plates? Ordering from the other country may save some money, but shipment shouldn't take it instead. Therefore it would be practical, if you would be delivered the goods by representative from such country for instance at next Wikimedia conference or any other international meeting...

Hi HenrikKbh. Thank you for this request. We have a couple of comments and questions on the request:

  1. Yes, you can order the banners from another country, either directly or through another Wikimedia chapter if they are willing to put the time into ordering for you. You can then reimburse them. Please be sure to consider shipping costs, which from Australia would be quite high. Poland would be a good option. Thank you for being cconscientious of the costs.
  2. We understand the banners are used to participate in events and workshops. Thank you for providing some examples of the types of event. It would also be great to know how you participate. Do you set up booths and do general outreach, are you leading workshops, presenting, etc.? It's helpful for us to know more about the chapter's activities. A great way to do this, and to remain in compliance with your chapter agreement, is to upload your activity reports here.

Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:35, 5 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  1. We will choose that option that gives the lowest total costs. It is not important for us which country it will be printed in, so if we can save a lot of money, we will surely choose that option.
  2. The banners can be used in different ways. The general idea is of course to be used as a presentation. At FSCONS we could set up a booth together with WMSE as a joint presentation. Depending on the outreach activity's kind, we could set up a table where WMDK could answer questions or coordinate the event. Banners will then be used both as 'advertisement' for us, but also identifying us - saying 'here we are'. One specific activity could be a photo safari which could be hosted in cooperation with one of our GLAM friends at a specific place. --EPO (talk) 08:44, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We currently do workshops and participate in conferences, and have arranged Open Data Day in 2013 (alone) and 2014 (with other organisations). --Palnatoke (talk) 12:05, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Palnatoke. When you have decided on the best option for printing/shipping the banners, please update the budget and grant request so we can move forward. Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:38, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Palnatoke and HenrikKbh please let us know if you've found a good option for purchasing the banners and we can move forward. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 17:19, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Updated[edit]

Since we haven't heard from the polish (user:Polimerek) about they assisting us in aquiring the banners, we have opted for single sided banners, thus reducing the cost and subsequbtly updated the grant request accordingly. -HenrikKbh (talk) 18:00, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the update. This request is approved. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:27, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
