Grants talk:PEG/Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of Education and Research/Wiki Loves Earth Brasil 2015/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hi Rodrigo Padula. Thank you for this detailed and informative grant report. Congratulations on a successful Wiki Loves Earth Brasil! The photos are beautiful and make me want to see more of your country! This report is approved. We have a few comments/questions and would appreciate your response below.

  1. You had a much higher level of participation than expected and this is attributed mostly to the social media campaign and media partnerships. We understand that the paid Facebook ads were the main drivers behind increased participation on social media. This is similar to what we've seen in other countries and good information to know. How did you develop the media partnerships?
  2. The partnerships with photo blogs and specialized portals also helped increase participation by professional photographers and improve quality. How did you create these partnerships?
  3. We understand one of the reasons there is a low percentage of photos in use is because of the higher than expected number of total photos. However, we agree that there needs to be more effort around photo integration for this and future contests. It does take significantly more community engagement and we hope you are successful in organizing edit-a-thons in the next few months to improve picture usage.

Thank you again for this report and all your work on the contest. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:30, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AWang (WMF),

  1. The paid ads were very important to promote the contest for new people. Since we are using that social media accounts since 2014, we received a lot of support from many photographers from the last edition.
  2. To develop that partnerships with blogs and photo portals I personally contacted many of them by email and by phone, talking about our ideas and general proposal, the contest was very well received by them.
  3. Sure, we received some community support improving the lists of monuments and using the top pictures in some articles. During the Wikipedia 15 event and WLE photo exhibition we organized an edit-a-thon, but since our community is refractively small and spread in many Brazilian states it's hard to organize a bigger edit-a-thon. This year we are planning to organize an edit-a-thon during and after the contest and promote the international usage of our photos as well.

That was our first PEG, so we learned a lot and for sure we will improve our results and reports for the next projects during the next years. It was a really good experience for our group.

Thanks for your support during the entire process.

Best regards
