Grants talk:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/General Support Fund/Yoruba Wikimedians User Group 2025-2026 annual activities
Add topic-Feedback regarding your application-
[edit]Dear Yoruba Wikimedians team,
Thank you very much for your application and for your immense continued efforts in growing Yoruba Wikimedia projects. The WMF Community Resources team and the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Funds Committee has convened to review your application and we have the following points for feedback before reaching a final decision:
The Committee would first like to acknowledge the positive aspects of your proposal, such as content drives, audiovisual documentation, edit-a-thons, and strategic partnerships, in addition to providing internet support (data, pocket WiFi) to reduce participation barriers and expand reach.
Upon reviewing your application, we would like to bring your attention to a number of points:
- The committee noticed that despite receiving funding for two consecutive years, Yoruba Wikimedians have yet to prepare a strategic plan and share it as part of the grant application. Having a clear strategic plan allows the committee and others to understand how the community plans on growing over the next couple of years, what are the expected outcomes, tactics employed, and how they plan on growing their reach. For example, for this grant application, you have reduced personnel and staff costs, but at the same time you have increased the costs of your projects. Please share a strategic plan that will allow the Committee to learn more about your organizational growth and how you make decisions.
- Please see a link to our strategic plan - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yoruba_Wikimedians_User_Group_Strategic_Plan_2025-2028.pdf
- The Committee requests the group to kindly provide a detailed breakdown of the budget. Costs like $6,000 for food/water for Wiki Clubs, $2,000 for admin-related travel/events, or $1,000 for operational costs and services need further breakdown so that it is clear how the budget items were calculated. This needs to be done for every budget item, thank you.
- This has now been done. Please see a link to our budget (note the “additional budget breakdown tab)
- Moreover, the Committee would like an explanation for the high compensation for the program director.
Items Unit No. of hours per day No. of days per week Cost per hour (USD) Cost per week (USD) Cost per month (USD) No. months per year Total cost per year (USD) Program Director 1 6 2 23 276 1,104 12 13,248
- The program director compensation is $23 per hour. This rate is a moderate and reasonable rate that reflects the responsibilities, experience level, and cost of living in Nigeria. As this is a remote role, the program director incurs costs such as internet data, electricity, home office maintenance. The rate compensates for these out-of-pocket expenses while ensuring consistent professional output.
- We also noticed that there were some errors in dates in the timeline that go back to the previous year. May you kindly review the timeline and adjust the dates accordingly?
- This has now been reviewed and fixed. See a link to the reviewed version - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kekF6vP_Rny-EdYIg6A_9E6JP5NCX7FKpKWzBy52bPE/edit?usp=sharing
- May you kindly share how you involved your community in the planning and evaluation of the previous year’s activities and used learnings from the previous year to inform the program of this year?
- On how we involved the community in planning this proposal, we collected feedback from community members through surveys and meetings to understand their perceptions of the impact of our work and gather suggestions for improvement. These feedbacks and input were used to plan our proposal to ensure that they reflect the needs and priorities of the community.
- May you please add or link the Meta pages of these fan clubs you founded or established? Kindly do the same for subsequent ones so as to ensure proper documentation of the activities of these fan clubs and for reference purposes.
- Done. See a link to it here - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Yoruba_Wikimedians_User_Group_Fan_Clubs
- Regarding the policy advocacy component of your proposal, it was advised that the policy advocacy area of focus is not a priority topic, as shared the previous year. To qualify as public policy advocacy, your work needs to target a specific legislation to promote, stop, or change that legislation. The overall intention should be to influence the regulatory ecosystem in which the user group operates.
- Our Policy advocacy work currently focus on reviewing the current Yoruba language orthography. A committee has now been set up and inaugurated by the goverment and we are member of the committee. The work is ongoing, and we want to sustain this effort. We are also currently working on chnaging the National language policy. We believe our advocacy works align neatly with this prority area.
Thank you very much, and please feel free to share your feedback in this discussion page by Wednesday, May 14 at 12 PM UTC.
Wishing you the best of luck.
