I find this project extremely useful. I've used the tool to create maps in several articles, and it's been a great help.

I've used it articles on the Spanish Wikipedia, for example:

and I found it very easy to use. It also made it easier to create maps with gradually colored maps based on a numerical relationship, such as the one on https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encarcelamiento_en_Uruguay.

I've also used it on the English Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Snooker_Tour#The_Triple_Crown

In this article https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Snooker_Tour I was able to easily replace the previously used PNG map https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snookerturniere.png

As you can see, by analyzing the information in this file,

• how costly it is to maintain in PNG format
• the difficulty of tracking these changes
• that the PNG format is not the most recommended for image use.

However, the World Snooker Tour article highlights the difficulty associated with not being able to zoom in on the map or enlarge it.

This is one of the grant's objectives, among many others that include improvements to an already valuable tool. It would be a great contribution to be able to carry out this project.

This is a simple yet brilliant idea that leverages recent SVG support in Lua to address the cumbersome and repetitive task of creating and updating this kind of maps in Wikipedia. And the fact that it lets changes be reflected in the articles' edit history is a great plus! Although a basic version is already available, there is plenty of room for improvements and it sounds reasonable to invest some community resources to support their development.

Me parece un excelente proyecto para facilitar el uso de mapas en los proyectos Wikimedia. Tiene un potencial enorme. En mi caso, me ayudaría a crear y actualizar mapas sobre temas relacionados con patrimonio cultural (plazos de derecho de autor, excepciones al derecho de autor, etc.). La herramienta todavía tiene algunos detalles por mejorar, y creo que este grant ayudaría mucho a ello.

• The proposal is phrased in a way that you will fix as many problems as possible but it's not clear in regards to committed scope and if it can cause a positive impact with an MVP.
• Including disputed borders in the scope is an ambitious goal, the review committee was unsure if this was achievable. But even without this functionality the project is sound.
• The hourly rate seems higher than other projects being reviewed.

Questions to answer:

• What is the long-term maintenance plan for this project? Especially if this is rolled out to more wikis, will you continue to update and improve the template?
• Could you please add more details regarding the committed scope and positive impact?
• How did you calculate the hourly rate? And how did you estimate the development hours?

Hi, thanks for the quick review!

1. Regarding the long-term maintenance plan, I'm the main developer of Synchronizer, a tool for keeping Lua modules synced across Wikimedia wikis. I'm also the main writer of this guide on how to develop cross-wiki modules. So my plan is to follow my own recommendations and then use Synchronizer to keep the module synced across wikis as I add new features or fix bugs. This is what I currently do with Module:Excerpt and Module:WikitextParser, two modules I developed in the past and that I maintain and improve to this day.

2. Regarding the committed scope and positive impact, I'm not sure I understand you. As expressed in section 5 of the application, I commit to:

• Implement the listed features (see section 4 of the application)
• Export the module and template to frwiki, itwiki, ptwiki and dewiki
• Document the module and template in said wikis (in the local language of course)
• Use the template in a few high-visibility articles on each wiki, to spread awareness

Correspondingly, success can be measured by:

• The number of features implemented (and bugs resolved)
• The number of wikis with the module and template available by the end of the project
• The number and quality of the documentation in said wikis
• The number of high-visibility articles with the new maps by the end of the project
• Further success can be measured by any extra wikis that spontaneously decide to import the module and template, and articles that spontaneously decide to adopt the new maps.

3. The hourly rate is based on my hourly rate as a freelance web developer. I haven't worked on that platform for some years but I currently work for appropedia.org and charge a similar rate. Regarding the development hours, it's a ballpark estimate based on my years of experience. To be honest, it will probably require more hours of my time, but I'm willing to put on the extra hours to ensure a successful and excellent result, as I've done on previous grants and projects.
