Follow-up questions on your application

[edit]

1) We have funded many rapid projects from Japan. Here are some examples:

How is your project approach similar or different to these projects in terms of approach? What areas of innovation can we learn from your project? And how will your project contribute to building a thriving community of volunteers or contributors to the wikimedia movement in Japan?

2) Comparing the metrics across projects above, our sense is the target contribution for your project could be higher. Could you review and propose new contribution targets?

3) There has been a recent interest within the Wikimedia Community in Japan about suggestions related to guidelines and consistency across projects related to compensation for well-defined roles that do not replace volunteer activities, including (but not limited to) graphic design, training, childcare services, translation, project management, and Wikimedian-in-Residence roles. Apart from the billable hours to the project that you have captured in your budget, what other in-kind contribution are you providing/ offering? JChen (WMF) (talk) 06:21, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @JChen (WMF)
Thank you for your questions.
We need to consider about them to answer, so please give us few days.
Thank you for your understanding. Hurohukidaikon (talk) 12:10, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @JChen (WMF),
Sorry my late reply. These are the answers for your questions. If you have any additional questions, please let me know feel free.
Thanks.

Smilar points
  • Editing about a theme related in specific location.
  • Main participants are living in the target location.
  • Aiming to make participants' interesting for their living location.

Different points
  • location selection is based on "Japan Heritage" area, not in advanced specific location first.
  • We hope to get hints for regional promotion in Japan through the events.

Innovation
We think we can use the hints getting through our events for regional promotion not only in Wikimedia project but also the outer of them.
In particular, we can suggest any plans using Wikimedia project to local governments, or advice about visitors and immigrants enhancement based on our project.

Contribution for community
Because 104 of the Japan Heritages was certified by Japanese government at the time of October 2024, anyone can hold similar events in those many place in Japan.
It can digging "Potential Wikipedian" who researching their own living location independently.
And it will enrich amount and quality of articles about underrated local histories or cultures.
Not only that, it can make opportunities to discus about sustainability of small local cities in Japan.

New contribution targets
We change the target for uploading resources in Wikimedia Commons from 20 photos to 40 photos.
And we think improving article's quality is more important than increasing it's amount.
So we set two complementary targets about numbers of adding characters and references bellow.
  • Adding characters: total 30000 characters (3000 characters per article)
  • Adding references: total 50 references (5 references per article)
We will use these metics getting from Outreach Dashboard.

Not billable contribution
  • We spending our time and money out of budget like bellow: meeting, demonstrating, on-site inspection, research and collecting resources, event planning, writing documents, writing reports, event promotions.
  • And we also spending time for answering like this questions.

Thank you for your application and for taking time to respond with additional information. Congratulations, your application has been approved in the amount of JPY 300,000 from 20 April 2025 to 31 January 2026.

  • Please add a revised tab in your budget sheet to match the approved amount and provide an update when this is completed.
  • From the review process, the common observation among the reviewers were that the project can have higher target metrics and more efficient budget costings. Hence, the approved budget has been adjusted. We also thank you for taking into account our suggestion to increase the project's contribution targets.

Follow-up conversation

[edit]

Hello @Hurohukidaikon,

Thank you for taking time to join a conversation on 19 May.

We are confirming that there is no change to the funding outcomes that has been approved.

During our call, we discussed about your proposed payment standards and understand that the time contribution to the project is likely much higher.

For purposes of learning, we agreed that you will document the time spent on the project in your final report so that we can understand the hours that you have contributed to the project. This will also help the Regional Funds Committee understand the total time commitment to conceptualise -> implement and report on a project.

For future applications, we also hope you can consider focusing on community building in addition to outreach and awareness building.

Thank you once again for your efforts and contribution to the Wikimedia movement.
