Local historical societies take on the arduous work of connecting us to the past, specifically by:

  • finding primary sources
  • curating information
  • contextualizing information in a way that can be understood by a modern audience

This work closely mirrors that done by Wiki Editors and connecting these communities seems only natural. Building a closer relationship between these communities is mutual beneficial in that a) historical societies can grow the audience of their existing and b) the Wiki community can grow the pool of editors with local expertise.

Additionally, often times these groups have databases (the product of countless hours organizing information) that could easily adapted to be shared with a broader wiki readership (e.g. GLAM database--> Wikidata).

  • Support. As an active member of the Wikimedia Bay Area community, I recognize the importance of cultural heritage organizations based in the Bay Area to understand how to contribute to Wikimedia projects, including but not limited to Wikipedia (multiple language versions), Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource. This grant, aimed at covering food and beverage, could be the difference between an attendee staying a shorter or longer duration. I would be thrilled to see the "Lunch and Learn for Cultural Heritage Organizations in the Bay Area" be successful by the various measures described, and to the extent possible, will lend my support. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:04, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

This partnership has been in the works for a while and aims to add critical, missing cultural and historical knowledge about San Francisco to Wikimedia projects, as well as equip cultural institutions to engage with the Wikimedia projects on an ongoing basis.

This is a small funding request from a group of Wikipedians who have years of history of delivering good outcomes, in alignment with Wikimedia community values and strategy, and sharing them in our existing community networks of review.

I like that it is modest, likely to achieve its stated goals, and that it sustains the regional Wikimedia community and institutional partners as they request.

Although this request is just for a regular lunch and learn meetup, the social context is that it brings together and supports the Bay Area Wikipedians who otherwise do not have central places to meet, organize, and collaborate. This is important both for the ~50 Wikimedians in the region who wish to coordinate with each other, and also for institutions in the area who want to send their staff to connect with the Wikimedia platform and community.
