Support WIKI LOVES AFRICA SUDAN 2025
[edit]I would like to strongly support my community application. I was an active participant in the Wiki Loves Africa 2020 contest after joining the community as an article editor. I also actively contributed to the contest, gaining valuable experiences and insights. This experience introduced me to Wikimedia Commons, which I found to be more engaging and relevant. I emphasize the importance of supporting these platforms and hope to see more Sudanese photographers contributing and showcasing the rich cultural diversity of Sudan. Feedback regarding your rapid grant application
[edit]Dear Maram ali ahmed,
Thank you very much for applying for a rapid grant to organize Wiki Loves Africa competition for the Sudanese Wikimedia community. It is clear that there is strong endorsement from your community based on your grant discussion page. After a thorough review of your proposal, the WMF Community Resources team has a couple of follow up questions and points before reaching a final decision:
- Clarity on Activities and Logistics. Thank you for sharing details regarding the sessions in the proposal. Although it is still unclear how many sessions you plan to have online and in-person in Kosti and Nyala. May you share a breakdown of the exact sessions and where they will be held (in-person or online). How many participants are you planning on engaging from each city and from the Sudanese diaspora?
- Risks and mitigation. May you also share how you selected Kosti and Nyala as the cities for in-person activities? To what extent will you be able to conduct activities and photowalks without there being associated risks to the safety and security of Wikimedia volunteers and how are you planning on mitigating these risks? Have you considered holding only online activities to ensure the safety of Sudanese Wikimedia volunteers? Relatedly, are there risks associated with transportation to and from these cities given the current context in Sudan?
- Budget considerations. We recommend that you try to reduce the budget for food and refreshments as it is considerably high. Can this amount be reduced by reducing 13 days of in-person training? We also understand that currently there are internet connectivity challenges in Sudan, may you also clarify why the internet costs are also quite high?
- Metrics considerations. Given the team expertise and community buy-in, we also recommend that you increase your targeted metrics, particularly for Wikimedia Commons contributions.
May you please review the above recommendations and adjust your budget and proposal accordingly? Thank you very much and wishing you a wonderful start to the 2025.

- Clarity on Risks and mitigation:
- We have selected both cities after consulting our fellow colleagues Fatima and Hassan. They are both based there actively involved in NGO work and both cities are considered safe to work in and hold activities indoors. And for us it is important to use the events to build the capacity of the participants to be able to get more involved in the community of Wiki and to help open opportunities to use the capacity they gain from the training within the community they serve.
- As for the photo walk we had a discussion that the theme itself could be covered within the humanitarian aid activities within both cities. No traveling will be required and it is to a high extent safe to take photos on such occasions.
- Clarity on Budget considerations.
- When we designed the training sessions in both locations the idea that members of the community are now shifting carriers or working temporary work and helping the them gain photography skills will be a win-win situation for us we would like to continue the planned activities as it is, but we worked on reducing the budget of the food and transportation.
- Regarding the internet cost in Nyala, the internet is only provided by satellite connection which is considerably high for the cost of the internet and the cost of the electricity as only solar systems are working in the city.
- Clarity on Metrics considerations. Given the team expertise and community buy-in, we also recommend that you increase your targeted metrics, particularly for Wikimedia Commons contributions.

Funded
[edit]Hello Maram ali ahmed and Wikimedia Sudan User Group, thank you for submitting your Rapid Fund request. We appreciate your willingness to contribute to the Wiki Loves Africa campaign.
We have completed the review of your application and have decided to fund it in the amount of 1,482,430 SDG (2,500 USD). This decision was made with the following recommendations:
- The number of proposed training sessions and workshops seems excessive, leading to significant costs for food, internet, and related expenses. In contrast, the output in the metrics appears relatively low. We strongly encourage revising the plan to achieve a more balanced approach.
- Partial funding is conditional on conducting a thorough risk assessment to ensure it is safe to hold in-person workshops in Kosti and Nyala, Sudan.
On behalf of the Wiki Loves Africa review team.
