I think this proposal is going to contribute in any way to important developments around Wikimedia projects or Movement Strategy. We need more content about Southeast Asian (in this proposal context, Indonesian) cuisine. The selection of the cities/localities which are Manado, Aceh, Jambi, Lombok, Samarinda, Pangkal Pinang, and Bandar Lampung; some of them are underrated place in term of highlighting the cuisine. With this event, it can expose more cuisine and culinary from those places, and Wikimedia project as platform to access more knowledge about theirs. Other than that, we hope that there are more local communities/individual will join Wikimedia movement by doing this event.

  1. The project proposer, Pitchrigi, is one of the co-founders of the Jakarta Wikimedia Community, which successfully launched Wikipedia Betawi last year and is now preparing to launch Wiktionary Betawi. The community is also currently working on a similar, smaller-scale project funded by a grant from Wikimedia Indonesia.[1] I observe that the same model of activities and outreach is being applied to this project, which gives me confidence in its potential for success.
  2. The Jakarta Wikimedia Community is a growing group that has been attracting many new members since the past year. As a seasoned Wikipedian, I was also drawn to join because of their proactive engagement and the diverse range of activities they offer. Driven by young, culturally aware individuals, the community is committed to addressing gaps in cultural representation (through text, audio, and visual content). The members come from varied backgrounds, including linguistics graduates, university lecturers, high school teachers, corporate professionals, and homemakers. Additionally, several members have experience with Wikimedia projects, such as Rapid Grants or initiatives with Wikimedia Indonesia, ensuring a robust network and adequate skills in budgeting and evaluation reporting.
  3. Beyond the Jakarta Wikimedia Community’s own experience,[2] this project builds on and expands lessons learned from similar initiatives by the Wikimedia Bandung Community[3] and the WikiTutur Project.[4] As mentioned, several members have experience collaborating or networking with other Wikimedia communities in Indonesia, which suggests that the project’s field execution has been carefully considered.
  4. For specific projects, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikibook, and Wikimedia Commons will gain valuable new content related to Indonesian language and culture. Regarding the Movement Strategy, this project will foster deep community engagement, enable members to acquire new skills, drive creative digital innovation, and expand outreach to build relationships with organizations and individuals outside Jakarta. These efforts could lay the foundation for future local communities. Overall, I believe this will create a ripple effect for the Jakarta Wikimedia Community, enhancing cohesion and encouraging greater participation in future activities.
  5. Yes, I believe the proposal is quite coherent. Its strategies align with clear objectives, the budget supports planned activities, and expected outcomes are measured with realistic metrics.

Hi, my name is Fizzypop21, am writing this letter to offer my full endorsement for the "Wikimaknyus" project, an initiative spearheaded by my colleague, Pitchrigi. I know Pitchrigi to be a highly competent, dedicated, and trustworthy individual in every task and responsibility he undertakes. My unwavering confidence in his capabilities and integrity assures me that the "Wikimaknyus" project will successfully achieve its goals under his leadership. The "Wikimaknyus" project holds immense potential as a catalyst for local community development in various target regions. By focusing on capacity building and empowerment, "Wikimaknyus" can encourage local communities to become not just consumers of information but also valuable content producers. This is a crucial step in enriching the open knowledge ecosystem, particularly on Wikimedia platforms.

Through this project, we anticipate that target regions will be able to build and develop their own communities, actively contributing to Wikimedia projects. Imagine each area having enthusiastic groups documenting their local culture, history, geography, and a wealth of other knowledge in their own languages, and then sharing it with the world through Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikimedia Commons, and other Wikimedia initiatives.

The empowerment of these local communities will not only enhance the quantity and quality of content on Wikimedia platforms but also strengthen cultural identity and a sense of ownership over local knowledge. The "Wikimaknyus" initiative represents a strategic investment in the future of free knowledge, specifically regarding Indonesia's culinary heritage, and Pitchrigi is precisely the right person to bring it to fruition.

I am optimistic that "Wikimaknyus" will generate a significant positive impact, inspiring more individuals to engage in the Wikimedia movement, and ultimately, enriching our collective knowledge heritage.

Review questions Collated responses
1) Is the proposal clear in terms of the change it wants to make? Does the proposal indicate value/impact potential? Is the proposal viable? YES

Explanation

The change strategy is explicit: travel to target regions, collaborate with local guides to source and photograph dishes, then create and enrich content across Commons, Wikipedia (multiple local languages), Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikivoyage, and Wikidata—all using local language terms wherever possible. The elements combine into a coherent theory of change: preserve cultural heritage and local languages by generating multimedia content, while simultaneously growing and engaging regional Wikimedia communities.

There is strong evidence that this work can deliver meaningful value:

Cultural preservation & language equity: Documenting recipes, terminology, and imagery in endangered or underrepresented languages (Betawi, Sasak, Minangkabau, Sunda) fills critical knowledge gaps and safeguards intangible heritage.

Community building: Bringing experienced cadres (Pitchrigi & team) into direct partnership with local editors can spark new contributors and seed ongoing activities in regions with few active Wikipedians. -

Cross-project content synergy: Photos on Commons will feed into multiple projects; recipe text on Wikibooks and terms on Wiktionary enrich language resources; guides on Wikivoyage attract readers and travelers; structured data on Wikidata underpins future reuse.

2) Does the applicant have the experience (technical / organizing) capacity to implement this project? Does the applicant or team have experience on target Wikimedia projects? YES

Explanation

All listed team members have agreed to their roles, are familiar with Wikimedia processes, and will onboard additional community volunteers as needed.

Pitchrigi and outreach members collectively have hundreds of edits across Wikimedia Commons, Betawi Wikipedia, and Indonesian Wikipedia.

The team ran WikiTuPrèt & WikiPerkawi in Jakarta, delivering photos, local-language articles, and structured metadata to Commons.

They routinely use XTools to monitor contributions, Commons upload workflows, and Wikipedia article analytics.

They secured and executed a previous microgrant from Wikimedia Indonesia, proven budget tracking, reporting, and multi-stakeholder coordination.

The proposal’s four-month timeline mirrors past projects: pre-survey, on-site documentation sprints, and consolidated reporting.

Each outreach staff has experience liaising with local restaurants, coordinating meetups, and facilitating edit-a-thons.

Commons & Wikipedia (local languages): Strong track record in photography, media curation, and article creation.

Wiktionary & Wikibooks: Limited but growing experience—team members have created glossary entries and recipe pages during prior Jakarta pilot.

Wikivoyage & Wikidata: New domains for this team; they’ve outlined usage plans but have not previously published guide-style entries or structured data exports.

3) Does this proposal have support from Wikimedia community members?  Has there been sufficient engagement of community members through the endorsement and feedback process? YES

Explanation

The proposal has garnered strong positive support from at least 10 distinct Wikimedia contributors (e.g., Surasutori Useyuni, JyotiPN, Fizzypop21, Bungek).

Endorsers highlight cultural preservation, capacity building, and alignment with Movement Strategy, praising Pitchrigi’s track record and the project’s innovative scope.

Engagement so far has been predominantly affirmative—a chorus of endorsements without substantial critique or probing questions.

There’s minimal back-and-forth on specific budget items or methodological details (e.g., travel necessity, stipend rates, inclusion of Wikivoyage/Wikidata metrics).

No major objections or alternative proposals have surfaced on the talk page, but also few requests for clarifications

4) Does the proposed budget adequately reflect the investment needed to achieve the proposed goals? Recommendations & Considerations (You can make these changes by adding a revised budget tab)

The transport stipend is set at 400 k IDR per person—well above the suggested standard of 250 k IDR—adding roughly 4.4 M IDR to overall costs without clear justification.

Fully funding Jakarta-based travel for all regions strains the budget; local guides could handle more photography and initial write-ups, reducing the number of flights needed.

There is no dedicated line item for training workshops on Wikivoyage or Wikidata, even though the proposal highlights capacity-building as a goal.

Recommendations for Optimization

4a) Align transport stipends to the local affiliate standard (250 k IDR) to free up approximately 4.4 M IDR for other uses.

4b) Delegate primary photography and data collection tasks to paid local guides, potentially cutting flight costs by up to 30%.

4c) Reallocate savings into explicit training sessions—allocating 5–10% of the budget—to teach Wikivoyage editing and Wikidata modeling.

4d) Group nearby regions into single trips (for example, combining Lombok with Bali outreach) to reduce both airfare and lodging expenses.

4e) By right-sizing stipends, leveraging local expertise, and redirecting funds toward capacity building, the budget will more accurately match the investment necessary to achieve the project’s ambitious cultural-heritage and community goals.

5) Does the applicant show clarity in what they hope to learn from their work given the change they are hoping to achieve? Recommendations & Considerations (You can consider adding this into your final report, as needed/if applicable)

By tying each learning goal to core activities—field documentation, local-language editing, community outreach—the applicant demonstrates that what they hope to learn flows logically from what they plan to do.

For example, learning how recipe-photo uploads spur new editor sign-ups speaks directly to their aim of community growth; understanding cross-cultural barriers feeds back into refining their inclusive outreach model.

While the learning objectives are well articulated, the proposal lacks detail on how these lessons will be measured or captured. There’s no mention of:

  • Specific indicators (e.g., pre- and post-event surveys, editor retention rates)
  • Data-collection methods (interviews, focus groups, content-use analytics)
  • Timing and responsibility for learning reviews

Without clear evaluation mechanisms, insights risk remaining anecdotal rather than evidence-based.

Recommendations to Enhance Clarity:

Define measurable indicators for each learning goal (e.g., participant survey scores on “confidence editing in local language,” number of repeat contributors per region).

Incorporate simple feedback tools—post-event questionnaires, short interviews with local guides—to systematically capture challenges and successes.

Assign a team member to analyze learning data monthly, then share distilled findings on the project report.

Leverage existing analytics (Outreach Dashboard, PetScan) to track changes in editor activity tied to project interventions.

6) Questions or feedback to the applicant based on your review We need a response to these questions

6a) Several microgrant-funded local-cuisine documentation projects exist (e.g., (Palembang, Bandung). What differentiates WikiMaknyus in terms of content scope, methodology, or language preservation?

6b) You aim to learn about cross-cultural collaboration challenges. Could you outline concrete steps—like guided focus groups or structured interviews—to surface those challenges and document best practices?

6c) The proposal mentions Wikivoyage and Wikidata as target projects but omits their metrics. Could you add clear numeric targets for contributions (e.g., number of Wikivoyage guide entries or Wikidata items created)?

6d) In your final report, could you also track net content re-used related to your project? Here are samples of how others teams have done this:

Response for "Review responses, questions and action items for your application"

[edit]

Dear @JCheng (WMF)
I want to answer what you asked several days ago. I answer the question one by one.

4) Does the proposed budget adequately reflect the investment needed to achieve the proposed goals?

Answer 4a) We allocated the budget. Before we need some budget for flight, now the flight cost was reduced and it changed into other beneficial activities, e.g., for edit-a-thon and for Wikivoyage-Wikidata training. We reduced the cost and we have 30% extra cash for doing edit-a-thon and Wikivoyage-Wikidata training.

4b) We increased the payment for local guides. Therefore, they can help several jobs, e.g., being guide for local Wikimedians to take the food picture, record local language voice, collect the words about cooking and food recipes. Before they conduct the programme, they will be taught for doing those programmes, so the collected data will be match the goals.

4c) As explained above.

4d) We only able to group Samarinda and Manado. The others region does not have direct flight, which will not save much flight costs. In turns, we change the plan to go to Bandar Lampung by train and ship instead of taking plane, which allow us to save up to 30% of the flight costs.

4e) As explained above.

5) Does the applicant show clarity in what they hope to learn from their work given the change they are hoping to achieve?

Answer We have defined measurable indicators for the learning goals through questionnare, as recommended. The current draft for the questionnare can be found in here.

6) Questions or feedback to the applicant based on your review

Answer 6a) WikiMaknyus expands its reach both geographically and culturally. This project is designed to engage with various regions across Indonesia’s vast archipelago. Our focus is distributed across five main areas: Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the Nusa Tenggara Islands, and Sulawesi with on-the-ground activities carried out in eight cities: Jakarta, Lombok, Jambi, Samarinda, Bandar Lampung, Pangkal Pinang, Aceh, and Manado. In terms of approach, we document local culinary heritage through photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, while also actively creating new Wikipedia articles, especially on topics that have not previously been covered. Beyond that, we contribute to other Wikimedia projects such as Wikivoyage, Wikidata, Wikibooks, and the Wikimedia Incubator for example, through content in the Sasak language. A key focus of WikiMaknyus is the preservation of local culture. We use and promote local languages such as Jambi Malay and Betawi to narrate culinary traditions as integral parts of cultural identity, many of which still have active speakers but lack sufficient digital documentation.

6b) Following the edit-a-thon, we prepared a questionnaire as a reflective tool for community participants, which can be accessed here. The questions were designed to explore participants’ experiences throughout the contribution process, including how they engaged with and understood different cultural contexts while working on culinary entries for Wikivoyage and Wikidata. From these reflections, we began to identify points of convergence that emerged through cross-cultural collaboration. In addition, we created space for informal conversations, which naturally unfolded during the event. We also conducted a number of short interviews with participants from diverse cultural backgrounds to capture how they interpreted food, traditions, or local terms that came up during the interactive discussions. The outcomes of this process will be compiled into a learning report. We hope this effort will serve as a foundation for a more holistic approach in future activities and as a resource for anyone interested in developing similar projects.

6c) We aimed to make concrete contributions to Wikivoyage and Wikidata. For Wikivoyage, we plan to create a total of eight travel guide articles, each representing one of the cities where our activities took place. Every article will feature the region’s distinctive culinary context, travel routes, and relevant local insights, providing readers with a closer look at each destination. While Wikivoyage was not initially our primary focus, we’ve been more active on Wikipedia and Wikidata, we found the materials we gathered were highly relevant and too valuable to exclude. So, we decided to contribute to Wikivoyage along the way, ensuring the content is developed thoughtfully and with serious intent. Historically, contributions from Indonesia to Wikivoyage have been limited, despite the country’s vast and diverse tourism potential. Through this project, we hope to bring more regional stories to light and encourage new contributors to explore and grow the platform further. For Wikidata, we are targeting five culinary entries from each city, with each item containing at least five data statements, such as place of origin, main ingredients, dish type, and links to relevant Wikipedia articles or Wikimedia Commons media. This approach will result in a minimum of 25 structured statements per city, leading to a total of 200 data statements across the project.

6d) Thank you for the recommendation. We do plan to use the tools mentioned above. These tools will help us monitor how content from this project is being reused. Tracking these data is important to us, as it allows us to assess the real impact—whether the data and articles we’ve created are actually being accessed, read, or repurposed in other Wikimedia projects. We will also include this usage data in our final report as part of the project’s evaluation process.

Thank you kindly attention. We hope these answers can help to give understanding about what we want to do with this programme. Pitchrigi (talk) Pitchrigi (talk) 15:50, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

In addition to this answer, we would also like to inform that we revised the budget on the same file as previous spreadsheet, but on the new "Application Rev." sheet. This file can be accessed through the same link as provided on the proposal or through this link: Budget rev.. Thanks! NikolasKHF (talk) 06:03, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
