Add topic[Request] Using unspent funds
[edit]Dear Team, I would like to request your permission to use the unspent funds towards a short project that celebrates 25 years of Wikipedia through a creative book project.
The remaining amount to spend: INR 236800
Project Description
This project takes Wiki's stubs related to India and its culture (around 25) as a starting point to visually present the 'sum of all human knowledge' in a zine/book format. Knowledge is produced in several forms and expressed in many ways and this project seeks to demonstrate the same.
This project explores stubs through archival storytelling, photography, and participatory knowledge-building. Each topic (stub) - ranging from embodied knowledge to places - would be explored through a photo essay and notes based on interviews (where possible). Most topics would also invite photo-contributions from other Wikipedia volunteers. All photos/videos would be uploaded to Commons and some would be used for illustrating the Stub pages.
The culminating handmade zine would also be digitally reproduced and will be uploaded to Commons.
25-30 printed versions would also be created.

In the above, the making process would be highlighted with captions. Some pages might include relevant images from GLAM institutions. The last example for instance is of heritage-value and its story would be captured through multiple sources - archival images of its construction but also personal engagements of long-time storekeepers and their photos as well as a historian's view.
In a sense, the zine would be like a mini-museum of 'life in India as told through Wikipedia Stubs'. The printed one would also include a poster, postcards and a tote bag.

I would additionally make an effort to collaborate with a museum to exhibit these photos alongside QR codes to Wiki Stubs and Commons categories by developing a digital kit such that the institutions can download, print and exhibit. If there is any budget remaining to produce the exhibition, I would do so with one institution.
The budget breakdown would be within the following line-items though once the topics are finalised and number of pages and content is collected, a more exact figure can be estimated.
a. Logistics (local transport, f&b...) - Rs. 1000-1200 per topic : up to Rs. 30,000
b. small honorariums for the time of some participants (e.g a Razai maker, trapeze artist and so on) - around Rs. 1500 per topic for a full/2 full days of shooting : Rs. 35,000
c. Production and Stationery of the handmade zine (including memory card, book design, layout and photo edits and scanning) : Rs. 50-75000
d. Print and binding of the book (including cover) - around 25-30 copies: up to Rs. 60,000
e. Merchandise (posters, postcards, tote bag) : Rs. 30-35,000
f. Misc: up to Rs. 5,000/-

- Hello @Medhavigandhi, thanks for posting this request. We approved it and extended the grant end date to June 30, 2026. After running proposed activities and using the remaining funds, please include an updated expense table and details of new activities into the report.
