Criteria Inputs/ Comments/ Questions
1) Is the proposal clear in terms of the change it wants to make? Does the proposal indicate value/impact potential? Is the proposal viable? YES

Detailed explanation

  • The proposal demonstrates clear alignment between background, objectives, strategies, and planned activities.
  • The applicant conducted a preliminary survey to select Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Lagong as the intervention site, reflecting systematic planning. The project emphasizes a respectful, ethical, and community-centered approach to documenting indigenous knowledge, from data collection to publication.
  • Anticipated technical challenges, such as limited internet connectivity, have been addressed.
  • A minor clarification is needed regarding the target platform: Q6 mentions Wikipedia, whereas Q18 refers to Wiktionary. Clarifying this will ensure clear objectives.
  • Innovation and learning: As this is a university course project, continuous activities in subsequent semesters using Wikimedia projects will allow for regular outreach to multiple indigenous communities and can become a recognized class project in the university. Collaboration with the local department of indigenous affairs allows for better support for the community in terms of future infrastructure and planning on cultural preservation.
  • Impact and notability: Since the project focuses on multiple gatherings with the indigenous community members, better retention of contributors can be achieved as well as new contributors can be gained in subsequent gatherings.
2) Does the applicant have the experience (technical / organizing) capacity to implement this project? Does the applicant or team have experience on target Wikimedia projects? YES

Detailed explanation

  • The applicant and team have previous knowledge on interacting with indigenous communities in the country and have learnt skills on how to use various Wikimedia projects.
  • The applicant and the team demonstrate relevant knowledge in documenting and preserving Indigenous Wisdom through a respectful, ethical, and community-centered approach, indicating technical capacity suitable for implementing this project.
  • The applicant (Username: barbiemariposa) has been serving as a finance controller since November 2025. While direct experience leading a Wikimedia grant project is limited, their current role demonstrates an understanding of resource management and contributions that can support project implementation.
  • Overall, the team possesses relevant capacity and potential to grow through involvement in this project, while gaining experience that can serve as a foundation for further skill development in the future.
3) Does this proposal have support from Wikimedia community members?  Has there been sufficient engagement of community members through the endorsement and feedback process? YES
4) Does the proposed budget adequately reflect the investment needed to achieve the proposed goals? NO

Detailed explanation

  • The proposal includes a budget request for purchasing a camera (Nikon D3500), while the program is scheduled for approximately three days.
  • Given the short duration of the activity, the applicant may consider whether renting the equipment would be a more cost-effective option.
  • Additionally, there is a separate budget allocation for a “Symposium”; however, this activity is not clearly described in the program narrative. It would be helpful to clarify whether the symposium is planned for Day 1, 2, or 3,
  • The budget seems quite conservative for the project's goals of multiple visits for long term community retention. Recommend to reallocate the budget for the purchase of the camera to cater to community retention efforts.
5) Does the applicant show clarity in what they hope to learn from their work given the change they are hoping to achieve? YES

Detailed explanation

  • For initial engagement activities, the proposed metrics are satisfactory. For long term retention, higher metrics goals are recommended.
  • Could the applicant consider increasing the metrics, particularly for Wiktionary? With 75 words and 29 participants, the average is only 2-3 words per participant. A target of 10-20 words per participant seems more reasonable.
6) Questions or feedback to the applicant based on your review We need a response to these questions

a) See comments at question 1. Could you confirm which wikiprojects you will be contributing to? Please list all of them in the metrics section.

b) See comments at question 4. Could you clarify if the budget requested for the camera is for rental or purchase? Please note that we do not provide funding for equipment for individual projects.

c) See comments at question 4. Could you provide more details on the symposium and how it fits into your project timeline?

d) See comments at question 4. Please review your budget to see if there is a need to revise your budget (i.e. change equipment purchase to rental and check if additional budget is needed for regular meeting with the community). Please also use the budget template for the rapid fund programme to present your revised budget

e) Please also share a timeline for your project.

We will also be returning the application to you on Fluxx so that you can make the necessary changes to your application based on the feedback above.

a) See comments at question 1. Could you confirm which wikiprojects you will be contributing to? Please list all of them in the metrics section.
We will be contributing to Wiktionary as part of this project. The focus of our contribution is to enrich the platform with both visual and textual content that supports language documentation and understanding. In terms of metrics, the project targets a total of 250 uploads, consisting of pictures and words. Additionally, the project aims to involve 29 participants who will contribute collaboratively to achieve these outcomes.
b) See comments at question 4. Could you clarify if the budget requested for the camera is for rental or purchase? Please note that we do not provide funding for equipment for individual projects.
We have decided to rent two cameras for our project.
c) See comments at question 4. Could you provide more details on the symposium and how it fits into your project timeline?
A university symposium will be held to present the outcomes of the Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons activities. A university symposium is an academic event where students, faculty, and invited guests come together to showcase research, projects, and creative works while engaging in discussion and knowledge exchange. As part of the symposium, the project team will prepare a dedicated booth to display the vocabulary entries contributed to Wiktionary and the photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. To attract students and lecturers to the booth, interactive games with small gifts will be organized, encouraging participation and engagement with the project materials. The symposium aims to share project outputs, receive feedback, promote awareness of indigenous knowledge preservation, and recognize the contributions of participants. By combining the booth, interactive activities, and presentations, the project ensures its outcomes are effectively showcased to the wider university community, fostering both academic learning and long-term engagement.

Please review your budget to see if there is a need to revise your budget (i.e. change equipment purchase to rental and check if additional budget is needed for regular meeting with the community).
