Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Kamal Osama/Wiki Loves Earth 2018 Egypt

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hello Kamal Osama thank you for submitting a grant request for Wiki Loves Earth 2018 Egypt. I am moving this request back to draft for now as we are not reviewing new proposals that have been submitted during the rapid grants closure (May 14 - June 30). Please feel free to move it back to proposed on July 1, 2018. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. Best regards,WJifar (WMF) (talk) 15:44, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Woubzena Jifar, I hope the grant is reviewed quickly so that no delay occurs. It's important to mention that the contest was hard to happen during its normal time in May and June cause the volunteers would not have come during the Ramadan month. Also, we took into consideration the worldwide contest of "Wiki loves Earth" which will declare the worldwide winners in September. We believe that we only have time to participate in case the grant is approved "quickly"! Best Regards --Kamal Osama (talk) 14:24, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kamal Osama, I have changed your request back to proposed and will review quickly. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 07:17, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Comments from WMF[edit]

Hello Kamal Osama thank you for your submission. I have a few follow up questions for you before we proceed:

  1. How are you calculating $700 USD for each editathon?
  2. What are the prizes you plan to give to judges? How many judges will there be? Normally the prizes for judges are just a token of appreciation and should not cost as much as the prizes for contestants. Please clarify.
  3. I see you're planning to upload 1500+ photos. Can you let me know how you're estimating this number? How many did you upload in previous contests? It seems a lot for 15 people to do.
  4. Lastly, can you explain how you're calculating the short trip? How many people? What type of transport? How much per trip? It would help in understanding the total.

I look forward to receiving your responses. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 14:09, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Woubzena,

  • First of all, I think that we should postpone the competition if we agreed to proceed. I recommend to start as soon as the grant arrival!
  • Secondly, My plan was to hold two or three times edit-a-thons during the competition period. The plan was to hire a suitable place and invite the volunteers from different photographic and environmental clubs in Cairo, Egypt. I see that 700$ is enough for the edit-athons, especially that the main resources (laptops) will be brought by the volunteers or by the hired place itself.
  • For the Judges, there would be three professional judges at least to avoid claims from the participants. Otherwise, We can reduce the cost but at a minimum, I hope it is not less than 250$. The money will be spent cash in hands to the judges.
  • The plan to upload +1500 were hit in my previous three contests held last year in 2017. I plan on engaging 15 participants but I expect to engage more.
  • Last but not least, the short trip will be within the great Cairo. It would be in Wadi Degla protectorate or in one of the Nile Islands.

at the end, I hope I have answered all your questions. Thank you for your support! --Kamal Osama (talk) 15:18, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One more question[edit]

Hello Kamal Osama, thank you for answering my questions. Yes we can proceed with grant arrival being the start date for your project. We can adjust the dates once you've received the funds. One remaining issue is as follows:

  • Cash prizes are no longer allowed for contests. Any chance you can change those to gift cards or vouchers? We can reduce the total cost for the gift cards to $240 USD and that way it would be $80 USD for each judge. But again please let me know if you're able to change the cash prizes into vouchers or gift cards.

One more answer[edit]

Dear Woubzena, The reason that am asking for cash for judges is that vouchers are not much appreciated in Egypt and not common. They usually appreciate certificates and cash. another possible thing is to give them some gifts in hands. Vouchers are not preferred.

  • For the contest prizes, we can offer such gifts like cameras or such photographic accessories. however, am afraid that this variation might increase the grant. Anyway, I will write to you soon about the options that we can apply to the contest...Regards, --Kamal Osama (talk) 22:55, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Kamal Osama Please let me know if you have decided on the gifts for judges so we can move forward on this grant. If so please edit the proposal page to show what the gifts will be. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 21:55, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Moving this to draft[edit]

Hello Kamal Osama I am moving your grant request to draft as we have not received a response from you since September 6th here on the meta page or to our email request on September 20th. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 21:48, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Woubzena, Sorry for saying that this "Rapid grant" was no longer rapid. I understand the delay in accepting the proposal. I also hope that Wikipedia understands my delay in response. It reached a point when we can not start a competition while it is closed in all participant countries! I hope we can re-propose this project by April 2019! Happy New Year! --Kamal Osama (talk) 18:37, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kamal Osama, I understand your response. I look forward to seeing this proposal being re-purposed in 2019. Please be sure to make the necessary edits regarding gifts for judges before doing so. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 06:08, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
