Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Krishna Chaitanya Velaga/VIVA-VVIT Edit-a-thon/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga. Thank you for this detailed report and congrats on a success series of events! We're happy to hear you had such great engagement from the students and that the organization went relatively smoothly. Having the data from the dashboard is very helpful in understanding the level of participation and activity. We have a few follow-up questions and look forward to your responses.

  1. How have you been able to follow up with participants?
  2. Have you been able to track their continued activity on wiki?
  3. What was the level of interest in the plans for a user group?
  4. What was the role of the resource persons and did that aspect of the project work well?

Thanks! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:19, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AWang (WMF): Hi Alex, thanks for reviewing the report. Answering your questions:
  1. As I am a student of the same college, I have been engaging the participants by conducting weekly or bi-weekly meets. I am sure that a long-term (to be proposed soon) will help me to run continuous activities related to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  2. I have been using outreach dashboard to track the recent edits of participants. As you can see from the same, about 5–7 editors have been contributing after the edit-a-thon. However, the activity is low as we're packed with semester-end final examinations, but I am sure that more editors will make a comeback after the exams.
  3. Though initially I intended to form a user group, it was not suggested as a good idea by some of the community experts. They suggested that user group might not be a good idea at just one institution, however, they suggested to form a WikiClub. It a sort college-level club, similar to Culinary Club, Photography Club etc. that envisions to promote the Wikimedia movement in the college. We've already formed VVIT WikiClub with twenty participants. However, to establish formally, I'm planning to obtain a registered trademark design from WMF, and I request your inputs in doing so. Also I wish WMF takes a note on a new type of affiliate-model i.e. "WikiClub", a formal group that drives the Wikimedia movement at college-level, and forward it to the AffCom for consideration.
  4. Yes, the resource persons part was very helpful, for Telugu edit-a-thon. As I am a English Wikipedian, the sessions on Telugu Wikipedia were completely handled by external resource persons only. I took the part of the English edit-a-thon. The fourth resource person, Suyash Dwivedi, one of the founding members of Hindi Wikimedians User Group briefed about Wikimedia Commons, and also his visit made us to re-think the usergroup formation, and helped us in establishing a WikiClub.
Thank you once again. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 11:39, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
