Questions/Comments from I JethroBT (WMF)[edit]

Hi Mikael Häggström, thanks for your report! I have a few comments and questions around the remaining funds for the COPE membership, the prize competition, and the Crossref receipt:

  • It appears like the expense for the prize competition funds can't be documented until December 2017 because it's a monetary prize. Let me know if that's the case, or correct me if I've misunderstood anything. I'm happy to review the report, but it looks like we'll need to wait to formally approve it until then.
  • Regarding the COPE membership funds, were you planning on waiting to see if membership would reopen? If not, were you planning to use these funds for another project? If neither of these apply, you will need to make arrangements to send those funds back to the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • For the Crossref membership, when do you expect to be able to provide documentation? Is there anyway you can contact Crossref to provide it ahead of time?

Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 19:45, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I JethroBT!
  • You are correct that the prize competition funds cannot be documented until December, so we would indeed need to wait until then if you need documentation.
  • Yes, we are waiting on COPE to reopen for membership applications. So if we need to wait until December for a final report anyway, perhaps we can be allowed to wait that long for COPE membership applications to reopen as well?
  • The Crossref membership fee should be in the April 18 email to rapidgrants@wikimedia.org. Let me know if you want it forwarded to your address as well, or if you need it in another format. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:30, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikael Häggström: Thanks for this clarification. Just a few comments on the report:
  • Nice work in increasing the number of publications, and for having some more potential submissions in the pipeline, and for your work in using DOI links to make the project and these publications more accessible to readers. It was great to see the journal discussed in the ResearchGate interview and in The Conversation in the context of joint-publishing between Wikipedia and peer-reviewed journals.
  • It's also great to see the use of the Massviews Analysis tool to see how articles and article sections are being used in the journal. This is a convenient way to see growth in the journal.
  • I'm glad you've noted that the budget for maintaining the journal is quite minimal compared to the cost of publication in most other proprietary journals. This is a key benefit of this kind of project: With manageable expenses we can promote research findings and discussions in a way that makes them open to the public.
  • Given the limitations you've expressed with regarding to the editorial board members, I think it's responsible to be on the lookout for additional members to help as you've noted, especially considering your note about increasing submissions and interest. Thanks for letting us know about this challenge.
Given the circumstances of the report, what we'll do is nominally approve it with the stipulation that you will send us documentation for the prize funds (and possibly the COPE membership if it reopens; if it does not, you'll need to make arrangements to return the funds or let us know if you want to reuse them for a different project). Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I JethroBT, for the nominal approval! I will send you documentation for the prize funds when it's done, and by that time I will also update you on the COPE status. Mikael Häggström (talk) 19:08, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I JethroBT, I've now sent transaction details for the prizes as well as the COPE fee to rapidgrants@wikimedia.org. These didn't fully amount to the sum applied for, as now detailed at:

The remaining funds are listed as pre-existing "Resources" in the new grant application:
