Comments from DSaroyan (WMF)[edit]

Hello SAgbley, thanks for submitting this Rapid Fund request. We reviewed your submission and we have a few questions and requests:

  • Could you please provide more details about the need for running 5 editathons? I read that each editathon will have a slightly different focus. Please provide more details about their focus.
  • You are also planning to run training sessions. What will be their focus? What do you want to achieve with these training sessions?
  • Are you coordinating these activities with any other Wikimedia Affiliate in Ghana? Have you asked for support from any other local affiliates?

Budget:

  • Jury, Administrative expense - could you please provide a more detailed breakdown of these expenses?
  • Are all team members located in Winneba? Could you please explain the need for Transportation expense?
  • Awards - please reduce this expense to 400 USD maximum.
  • Space rental and food - I also request more details about this expense.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:37, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @user: DSaroyan (WMF),
Thank you for reaching out.
Firstly, we are running 3 edit a thons for each focus area not 5. The training will be 2 in all to give room for newbie’s to further learn and contribute greatly. The main focus of these edit a thons is to equip newbies and activists to improve on Wikimedia projects by creating articles and uploading on commons. It also has the dimensions of tackling topics on Climate, human rights and inclusion thus (hearing impaired groups).
The training session also looks at meeting the needs of each group since the focus area varies.
In the budget, we stated 5 workshops but that covers the 3 edit a thons on different time schedule and 2 training mostly for the Inclusion campaign contributors because from the previous campaign, there was a need to have more engagement time with them since their adaptation skills is rather slow and needs more time to transcribe using sign language amongst other needs. So the amount in the budget is purposely for venue hiring needs.
Yes we have engaged some members in affiliate groups for support such as Justice Allotey from Wikimedia Ghana who is an experienced Wikimedian who is willing to connect us with Humanright activists and institution (Human Rights Association of Ghana), also members of Gurene and Hausa community to engage their members to translate articles either at incubator or directly.
Administrative cost is a token for 6 team members and 2 sign language interpreters for their data/gift.
Jury cost, since this project looks at a sustainable approach to improve an aspect of SDGS on Wikimedia, we believe the jury's time will be supported with souvenirs and data to appreciate their time to review and select winners for all the two general contest.
For transportation, the hearing impaired team is located at winneba, in this case only few team facilitators and experienced sign language interpreters will be transported from Accra to Winneba and back on each meeting. Being hosted in a hotel or guest house will cost more so we wish to go and return back on the training days only.
There will be two general awards, so we humbly ask that we maintain it since it will award these contributors on two different dimensions such as (Climate and Human right as one and Inclusion as another which is $400 each) it will be quite difficult to reduce since price of things in Ghana keeps increasing by the day.
For space rental and food, this will be a meeting set aside for team members to rent a space for evaluation and reporting at the end of the project.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Looking forward to your feedback.
Best

Hello SAgbley, thanks for your responses. I'm sorry but we will not be able to fund high award prices and jury appreciation costs. We believe that prices should not be the most important motivation factor for participants and jury members. So please make the following changes to the budget:
  • Awards - please reduce this expense to 400 USD maximum.
  • Jury costs - please limit it to 70 USD per jury member maximum (internet + gift).
Other explanations make sense to me, thanks for putting them together. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:19, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
