Grants talk:Project/Rapid/libraryhack

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hi C3r098. Thank you for this grant request and all your efforts organizing the project. It's great to hear that you are trying to engage more librarians in contributing to the Wikimedia projects. We have a few questions before moving forward with the request:

  1. In addition to yourself, are there other experienced Wikimedians who will be supporting the event -- before, during, and after? It's important to have enough support for new editors, especially during the trainings and afterwards in terms of follow-up.
  2. In terms of the space for the event, are you holding it at a library where there will be easy access to resources? If not, can libraries offer this kind of space for free?
  3. What are the project manager fees for? As a volunteer movement, we typically do not cover project manager fees. However, if there are special circumstances that require it, please let us know.

As someone who principally supports GLAM projects, I want to iterate and endorse some of Alex W.'s thoughts: typically workshops and editathons get space donated by the host institutions, and typically project management is something led by volunteers or offered in kind from partner institutions. However, there are a lot of ways in which this project could better reflect more than "just a training", that might require extended project management: for example, if you were to focus on training librarians, who then go off and run events at their own libraries, as has been done by communities like outreach:GLAM/Case studies/Catalonia's Network of Public Libraries, or maybe the workshop is focused on retention through a series which reinforces the skills in a particular community, like in the case of the Czech Senior Citizen Training. These kinds of projects might require more than the standard kinds of energy and commitment that is typically offered in volunteer capacities.
There are also a number of experienced Wikimedians in the WMCO who might be able to help advise or support the project as well and lesson the complexity of organizing the event. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 22:40, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Moving back to draft[edit]

Hi C3r098. Since we haven't heard from you in two weeks, we are moving this request back to draft. When you want to re-open the request, please change the status to proposed and respond to our comments above. Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:38, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
