Aggregated feedback from the committee for Wiki loves Rural Areas - Bimenes[edit]

Scoring rubric Score
(A) Impact potential
  • Does it have the potential to increase gender diversity in Wikimedia projects, either in terms of content, contributors, or both?
  • Does it have the potential for online impact?
  • Can it be sustained, scaled, or adapted elsewhere after the grant ends?
7.1
(B) Community engagement
  • Does it have a specific target community and plan to engage it often?
  • Does it have community support?
6.2
(C) Ability to execute
  • Can the scope be accomplished in the proposed timeframe?
  • Is the budget realistic/efficient ?
  • Do the participants have the necessary skills/experience?
7.0
(D) Measures of success
  • Are there both quantitative and qualitative measures of success?
  • Are they realistic?
  • Can they be measured?
6.4
Additional comments from the Committee:
  • The project has a great opportunities to get the attention of First World, because the impact in rural areas could be implemented in other countries with similar issues: minor population in rural areas, and their histories can be lost in time. The online impact seems limited, but the project could design a framework to work in other countries.
  • Fits with strategic direction of knowledge equity by focusing on an a smaller language and emerging community, as well as by aiming to increase participation among women and older people in a rural setting. As these groups are underrepresented across many Wikimedia projects, there is good potential for online impact; however, the specific strategies for engaging these groups is unclear.
  • This small project fits with Wikimedia's strategic priorities. Its results (especially image and document donations) can be sustained and adapted elsewhere in the future.
  • Good fit with strategic priorities and high online impact (particularly increasing reach as the only village where Asturian is official is a natural target for Asturian Wikipedia). Chances are high this will be sustainable given this specific context.
  • The metrics seems well defined and easy to be measured. There are few risks about the participation and numbers (40% of female participation / 600 new wikidata items), but it may easily to be covered if there are interest in the local community.
  • I like the idea of focusing on a rural population and identifying best practices but would like to hear more about how the applicant will approach this issue with creativity and what ideas/strategies they think will work best. How will the handbook be different than other training materials (i.e. why create new, Asturian-specific ones instead of translate existing ones)?
  • The approach is iterative. The risks are relatively small and the possible payout is relatively large. The success can be measured although one of the measures of success - involving at 10% of the population - seems too ambitious.
  • Success measures are not clearly defined. in some cases they describe project activity rather than a concrete measure. What exactly is left behind after the project? Whether it's just articles and photos?
  • Good innovative project with reasonable and clear measures of success.
  • The budget seems fine, but it could maybe better if includes a guide to edit Wikipedia.
  • Applicant seems to be a passionate and active Wikimedian with teaching/facilitation experience. Their involvement with the BiblioWikiAsturias project seems highly relevant. For the budget, I would like to see breakdown/estimates of hours. In terms of scope, I’m not sure how impactful the exhibition will be and would like more details
  • The project can be executed within the requested four months. The budget is realistic and the applicant has necessary skills (based on his past experience).
  • I cant match the grantees profile and capabilities to be able to execute this project.
  • The project is realistic and the applicant is likely to be able to accomplish this. Support of local institutions is an additional plus. Having 10% of population as editors is an ambitious target but it is likely to be feasible (Esino Lario is an example of that)
  • Not many details about engaging women and older people are provided which makes me a bit skeptical that it will remain a focus. Few endorsements from target community - would love to see some support from participants from the BiblioWikiAsturias project
  • The community engagement is modest but this is understandable as astwiki is a small project.
  • There is some community support. however, it is unclear whether there is support fromlocal wikimedia chapter and what is their role.
  • Local community (Asturian Wikipedia) is clearly identified and supports the project. Local population of Bimenes also seems to have a significant interest in this proejct. By supporting a minority language it also contributes to improving linguistic diversity.
  • I am on the fence, mainly because I want more details than were provided in the proposal. I believe the proposal should go through to due deliberation so we can learn more
  • If we speak about diversity, this is a project having a diversity and working on diversity (like contributors and not like content). I like projects like this which suppose to bring different kind of editors to help the diversity and not projects which suppose to bring more content on the name of the diversity. This last solution can generate several conflicts instead of building a community.
  • I support this interesting small project. However some measures of success like involving 10% of the population may be unrealistic.
  • I will like to learn more about what work the grantee has done on the selected language Wikipedia and general experience in the Wikimedia movement.
  • the proposal is confused. the objectives, the problem, the solution and the measures of success are not clearly defined. possible change of voice if the situation changes
  • Good idea, clear plan and goals, reasonable budget, plus support from local institutions = good reasons to fund this.
  • I will say no because I'm not sure the grantee has enough experience to complete this project, and this project will spend most of the budget on staff expenses.

Some answers[edit]

  • About my relationship with Wikimedia Spain: unfortunately, I am the only member with knowledge of Asturian and time availability to carry it out. I have a very good relationship with the chapter, but I decided to apply for the individual grant only at the time I knew it could be carried out with all the guarantees of support from the community.
  • About my experience: I am an Asturian teacher and I have enough teaching experience and knowledge about Wikimedia projects to transmit them efficiently to the residents of the municipality. I would like to remember that I have been a publisher since 2006 and have conducted training workshops at various levels in various locations and institutions, from small towns like Bimenes to the largest city in Asturias and training 60 librarians or university students in a summer course organized by University of Oviedo.
  • About the dedication: I am an enthusiastic editor and I have never spared hours of dedication to editing. In this case it would be the first time that I dedicate myself to it as "a job" so it will be very difficult to differentiate my volunteer work with the "work" dedication. In the personal interview I think it was clear that I would dedicate the hours necessary to carry out this project within the funding period and later. If you need to stipulate a schedule it would indicate that I am going to dedicate "full time" to this project, always attending to the needs of the institutions, resolving doubts of the new participants and preparing materials for the training workshops.
