Challenges for working with Wikipedia data: Invitation to Research Office hours[edit]

@ASociologist: Thanks for this detailed report. Great to see the progress you have made so far : )

In the Section on Challenges, you mention that

Most of my obstacles were computational in nature: The sheer amount of Wikpedia data is difficult to work with.

If you continue to run into obstacles around Wikipedia data, I kindly invite you to join the WMF Research Team Office Hours. We would be more than happy to learn about the challenges you encounter in the research and try to help you solve them. The meeting takes place once a month (the next meeting should be on May 3). Thanks for highlighting the office hours, I'll keep them in mind! They do sound like a very useful place for support. ASociologist (talk) 14:58, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Report accepted[edit]

Dear ASociologist,

Thank you for submitting this report. I am accepting this report now and our Grants Admin team will follow up.

I appreciate your attention to thinking about how to address community needs, in addition to academic ones. I've already made use of your research in a meeting this week in which another staff person at the Wikimedia Foundation was brainstorming about how to measure the impact of offline hackathon satellite events related to a central online hackathon. We benefitted from your thinking and I'm looking forward to seeing more detail in your final report. I'm flagging our Learning and Evaluation Program Officer, Jessica Stephenson, who might be interested in following your research as well, in case there are insights that might help us better measure the impact of funding offline events. Perhaps a call would be worthwhile some time soon to sync about this.

Let me know if you need any support from us as you move forward.

Warm regards,
