Midpoint Report accepted[edit]

Thank you for submitting this Midpoint Report. I am accepting it now, with the following comments. You are not required to respond to the questions on this page, unless you would find value. They are here as food for thought and possible conversational prompts in future check-ins.

  • It's great to hear that the election for the new board has such a large turnout from members, and that you have been able to move out of an interim board formation into something more stable.
  • The focus on youth is very aligned with the Wikimedia movement's strategy. I'm curious to know more about your program and approach!
  • I'm especially interested in your work with Fil l'agulla. What a great idea to seek support from an organization like that. I would love to hear more about whether you have found the support helpful so far.
  • In regard to mistakes and missteps, it is very understandable that making a significant board transition after a period of instability, and during a global pandemic, would involve mistakes and missteps. I wonder if you have done any kind of retrospective to reflect on and capture learning from the crisis period and your experience with making a transition to a new board in the wake of it? I can imagine your learning would be of value to other affiliates who go through similar transitions. In the meantime, know that we understand that this is a hard transition and we understand that some things will take time before they get to where you want them to be. If there is a way we can support you, please let me know.
  • In reviewing your community program metrics, it is great to see your engagement with people under age 30. I am curious what strategies or formats seem to work best with this age group? I also wondered if you work with minors, and if so, how you manage risks of working with you in this respect? I saw that you mention trying to work with secondary school students, and were unable to because of the pandemic. I don't know if any of your other programs touch this age group. I'm asking about this because some staff in the Wikimedia Foundation have been thinking about how to manage risks of working with minors (as one example, because of the possibility of grooming by child predators that can arise in an online environment). This is something I'm seeking to learn more about from affiliates doing work with this age group.
  • I wondered about the metric for gaining 3 women members. Do you have any insights about what might be making this difficult?
  • It's super to hear that your members in Valencia are very active. I would like to learn more about how the work of your association, Wikimedia Espana, and Wikimedia Valencia collaborate and coordinate in that part of Spain.
  • That's great to hear that you are keeping up with blog posts and newsletters even in spite of the transition. I imagine this helps build trust with your community members.
  • Amazing to know you have so many follows on Twitter. (I'm going to go follow you as soon as I finish writing comments on this report!)
  • I don't know about the reasons for the "forced change" of the website. If this is something that is significant for you, perhaps you can update me in a future call.
  • It sounds like you have been through a difficult period in regard to staff turnover. I know you have just brought on a new staff member and I hope that it will start to bring some greater stability to your organization. If you have done a retrospective to capture learning that might help others learn from your experience, and to help you make sure to carry learnings forward, I would love to review anything you are willing to share. (If you have not done a retrospective, and would like to, I am sharing a website that can be helpful: https://www.funretrospectives.com/page/2/)

Thank you for all of your work and contributions through what sounds like it has been a challenging and complex period for you all.

Warm regards,
