APG approved in the amount of 102,757 EUR[edit]

¡Felicidades! Your grant is approved in the amount of 102,757 EUR, with a grant term starting 1 January 2021 and ending 31 December 2021.

Wikimedia España begins its 5th year in the Simple APG program. In 2020, has pursued several important endeavors including collaborations with established cultural and civic institutions focused on building Spanish cultural content, reducing known knowledge gaps related about rural regions of Spain with over 1000 articles developed and 600 multimedia files added to Commons, and continued long-term efforts to establish itself as a public utility that will allow the chapter greater access to funding opportunities.

WMES will maintain its existing programmatic structure this year (Content, Community, Public Policy & International Relations) but as this is the final year of its current strategic plan, the chapter will be setting aside time to develop its next organizational strategy for 2022-2024.

We are grateful to see WMES’s continued work at representing important, underrepresented communities in their context including women, older adults, and residents in rural areas of Spain, and that this outreach is bolstered through partners such as the Embajada de Suecia and the Biblioteca Nacional. We recommend that WMES consider a different metric beyond evaluating satisfaction to better understand the impact of training for participants. As an example, if one purpose of training is to encourage participants to use Wikipedia more often, or to attend other WMES events, participants could be asked about if they are more interested in those activities after the training. If possible, follow-up with participants after the event to ask how they are using the training would demonstrate direct impact.

On the organizational level, WMES has requested the addition of a strategy consultant, as its current staff lacks the capacity to support this work at this time. We are prepared to support this need, but also caution about the degree of work that staff and organizational leadership are carrying in the upcoming year. Last year’s recommendations increased the salaries of relevant staff who were underpaid based on their load of work, and so it is concerning to observe that staff continue to feel overwhelmed. It is important that WMES prioritize sustainable programmatic and operational plans over growth and expansion so as not to create burnout for its volunteers or staff, which may mean scaling back some programs or having to turn down programmatic opportunities.

We look forward to supporting Wikimedia España’s programmatic and strategic work in 2021.
