Grants talk:TPS/Nora56kb/FOSSASIA

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

To talk with UNESCO, it's probably easier to meet in Geneva or Brussels... Grants:PEG/MrjohnCummings/UNESCO Wikimedian in Residence is ongoing and can probably help arranging a meeting. A flight to New York would also be cheaper than the proposed amount. Nemo 08:30, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I get the impression, that Wikimedia is missing a big opportunity here to be involved on the forefront of the free knowledge community. There is an actual opportunity to meet UNESCO staff who is responsible for Open Tech and cultural heritage. "Talk with the UNESCO" - The UNESCO is not a homogeneous body, that you can meet where-ever. There have been a lot of requests from Singapore/Asia to meet up to foster the exchange of free knowledge with Nora and Jan (e.g. on the hackerspace mailing list). There were a number of retweets that were linked here as well.
I know that UNESCO is not a monad, but the application does not: I read «UNESCO will be part of FOSSASIA», period. If you know about «UNESCO staff who is responsible for Open Tech and cultural heritage» and why they can only be met at FOSSASIA, that's definitely something worth adding to the application. Request not funded[edit]

Thank you for this request, Nora56kb, and for your work to support open access culture. Although it sounds like important work, we are not able to fund your request based on the following criteria explained in the Travel and Participation Support page:

  • Contribution record: We require a history of engaging with Wikimedia projects and communities, and your record shows that this request is your only editing contribution to our projects.
  • Investment: The costs of participation do not seem well balanced with respect to the potential outcomes and impact.
  • Level of participation: A twenty minute talk is not likely to produce outcomes sufficient to warrant the cost of this request.
We also have the option of a three day workshop. It should have been mentioned more clearly, but FOSSASIA is just an ongoing community workshop anyways, where people give short talks informing others about their progress.

For these reasons, it does not make sense for Wikimedia to fund this request. We welcome future requests from you that may be a better fit and wish you all the best in your future work.

Thank you once again for your interest in this program. Best regards, 71.198.63.215 20:39, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of the responsibilities of the WMF is that it should foster free knowledge and not just focus on edits of registered people. Why do people have to sign in to edit? Why is it necessary to follow the urge to show off ones commits and contribution to free knowledge. The contribution of Nora have widely been portrayed in many media outlets publicly already. Unfortunately, I see an increasing division of the WMF with the goals of the wider free knowledge community. Maybe we can follow up on this in the near future. I am missing the open spirit of the early days a lot. I hope to see more examples in the near future, that show that I am wrong. Mario Behling (talk) 16:43, 13 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
