Hardware Tools Supporting Wikimedia Projects/Raspberry Pi for Wikipedia in Education
Raspberry Pi for Wikipedia in Education

About
[edit]Raspberry Pi for Wikipedia in Education is a technical education initiative that explores how low-cost computing infrastructure can support Wikimedia education programmes and expand access to open knowledge in learning environments with limited internet connectivity. Drawing on concepts from projects such as Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB), this event illustrates how lightweight, offline digital libraries can be deployed on Raspberry Pi devices to create local Wi-Fi learning hotspots accessible to students and educators. Internet-in-a-Box is an open-source project that enables the creation of self-contained offline servers broadcasting curated educational content, including full Wikipedia snapshots, Khan Academy Lite, maps, digital textbooks, and interactive learning tools, over a local network without requiring an internet connection.
The session will also cover PiWikiSpot, a Raspberry Pi–based offline learning infrastructure designed for low- and no-connectivity environments. Participants will learn how PiWikiSpot creates a local Wi-Fi hotspot to host a localized MediaWiki instance, enabling users to access, edit, and collaboratively engage with Wikimedia content while building technical and digital literacy skills.
