Explain your plan

[edit]

Tell us about how you contribute currently, and how you would contribute if WMF were to gift a used laptop to you.

I joined Wikimedia on 16 November 2013 and have over a decade of continuous experience contributing to Wikimedia projects. I am currently an Administrator on Hausa Wikipedia, where I play a key role in content development, quality control, and community governance. Over the years, I have contributed significantly to the growth of Hausa Wikipedia and remain actively involved in strengthening the community through mentorship, training, and outreach activities.

Beyond editing, I am a community organizer and facilitator. I have led and participated in multiple Wikimedia programs, including training new editors, organizing awareness campaigns, and supporting initiatives focused on improving content about underrepresented topics—especially women and local knowledge in Northern Nigeria. I have also been involved in strategic discussions and project planning within the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria community.

My content contributions are particularly strong in the area of healthcare, aligning with the goals of Wiki Project Med Foundation. I have created and improved important articles such as Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Maiduguri, and List of hospitals in Niger. I have also contributed extensively to COVID-19-related content in Hausa Wikipedia, including COVID-19 in Nigeria and 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Niger, ensuring that reliable health information is accessible to Hausa-speaking audiences.

On Wikidata, I have created and improved structured data items related to hospitals and health facilities, contributing to better organization and accessibility of medical knowledge across Wikimedia platforms. I have also uploaded a significant number of images to Wikimedia Commons, documenting important places and supporting open knowledge with visual content.

Despite these contributions and leadership roles, I currently edit entirely using a mobile phone, as I do not own a laptop. This creates serious limitations in performing advanced editing tasks, managing administrative responsibilities efficiently, handling Wikidata at scale, and organizing larger contributions.

If I am supported with a laptop through this program, it will significantly scale both my individual contributions and my impact on the community. I plan to:

  • Expand high-quality healthcare and medical content on Hausa Wikipedia in collaboration with Wiki Project Med
  • Translate and adapt reliable medical information into Hausa to improve public access to health knowledge
  • Increase my contributions to Wikidata, especially on health institutions and related data
  • Strengthen my role in training, mentoring, and supporting new editors, particularly women contributors
  • Lead and implement more community projects and outreach programs
  • Improve media contributions on Wikimedia Commons with better tools and workflow

With access to a laptop, I will be able to work more efficiently, take on more complex tasks, and significantly increase both the quality and quantity of my contributions. This support will not only benefit my personal work but also strengthen the Hausa Wikimedia community and improve access to reliable health information for millions of Hausa speakers.

I won’t be able to attend Wikimania in Paris myself. However, someone from the Wikimedia community in Nigeria who will be attending can collect the laptop on my behalf.

I will make sure everything is properly arranged and authorized, and the laptop will be safely brought to me in Nigeria. I am committed to using it to improve my contributions to Wikimedia projects, especially in healthcare content and supporting the Hausa Wikipedia community.
