Explain your plan
Tell us about how you contribute currently, and how you would contribute if WMF were to gift a used laptop to you.
I am an active contributor to the English Wikipedia but I am requesting the laptops for the use of Wikimedia Ghana User Group. The Wikimedia Ghana Usergroup (wmgh) started the first Ghanaian Wikimedian community in 2012.
While creating content for Wikipedia motivated the creation of the group, our raison d'être has been recruitment and training of new editors, as well as organising activities to engage existing ones; together with our partners over the years like Impact Hub Accra, MTN, re:publica, GIMPA Law School, U.S. Agency for Global Media (formerly BBG), Barcamp Ghana, Africa Open Data Conference, Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa 2018 (FIFAfrica).
This is because more Ghanaians should be given the opportunity to discover Wikipedia as an encyclopedia and also as an encyclopedia that they can edit with information relevant to Ghanaian topics. Additionally, we also want them to know Wikimedia has a world of open knowledge projects that they can take up.
Recently, we have added advocacy to our work. We started a campaign for Freedom of Panorama in Ghana in 2018.
Our priority for 2020 remains to recruit new Wikimedians and equipping them with knowledge about Wikimedia and engaging over 300 existing ones on our various platforms. We recently applied for an APG Grant which we were given and in our grants, we asked that we would purchase 3 laptops but they asked us to use this process instead of buying new laptops. So we are asking for 3 laptops for our programs for 2020.
Add the existing Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Commons, etc.) and language versions that you seek to impact with this equipment.
