[edit]Your preferred track during the workshop
[edit]- Track 2: Project Design Challenge – From Learning to Action
Which track are you most interested in and why?
[edit]- I am most interested in the Micro-Project Design track. My five years of experience with the open-source project Openpecha, combined with my enthusiasm for open knowledge, have led me to actively support the Tibetan Wiki community in making their literature openly accessible.
- Many members of this community face language barriers, and as a result, they have entrusted me to serve as their liaison. This includes seeking guidance from other Wiki communities, planning and documenting projects, and applying for grants.
- While I have some foundational experience in project planning from my involvement in a USAID project from 2022-2024, I am eager to formalize and deepen my skills. I believe this training will provide me with the tools to effectively plan and execute Wikimedia community-based projects, ensuring their long-term success and impact.
Tell us about one Wikimedia program, campaign, or initiative you’ve contributed to in a leadership role
[edit]- I haven't contributed to any Wikimedia initiative in leadership role.
What skills or knowledge do you hope to gain from this training?
[edit]I hope to gain practical skills in project design and transparent execution tailored for community-based initiatives. This includes learning how to:
- Define a project's scope and goals with a diverse group of community members, especially those who may face language or technical barriers.
- Develop effective workflows and timelines that are realistic for volunteer-driven projects.
- Create clear, public-facing documentation so that project progress, decisions, and resources are accessible to everyone, ensuring transparency and accountability.
These skills will directly enhance my current work with the Tibetan Wiki community. By improving our project design and management, I can more effectively support community members in digitizing and sharing their literature. This will not only increase the volume of open Tibetan knowledge but also empower the community to take on larger, more ambitious projects in the future by operating in a way that aligns with the best practices of the wider Wikimedia movement.
Based on your selected track, what is one challenge you have encountered in either evaluating Wikimedia programs or designing impactful projects? Please share your experience relevant to your chosen track.
[edit]- One of the primary challenges I've encountered is the initial project design and documentation for a new wiki community. While I have experience in project management, the unique, decentralized, and collaborative nature of the Wikimedia ecosystem presents a new set of challenges.
- Specifically, the Tibetan Wiki community is still in its nascent stage and lacks the established meta pages and templates common in more mature communities. As a result, it's often difficult to create clear, accessible project pages that define our goals, track our progress, and are easily discoverable by others.
How do you plan to apply what you learn after the event?
[edit]- I plan to immediately apply the skills I learn by designing and executing a series of editathons and proofreadathons in Bodh Gaya between November and January. This period coincides with several major Buddhist festivals, presenting a unique opportunity to engage a large number of participants. The training will help me structure these events more effectively, ensuring they not only increase contributions but also foster a sense of community ownership and sustainability.
- Longer-term, I will use my new skills to engage Tibetan monastic institutions. My goal is to work with them to develop a structured curriculum that incorporates Wikipedia and Wikisource contributions. By designing a well-thought-out program, I hope to embed open knowledge sharing into their educational framework, creating a lasting partnership and ensuring the continued growth of Tibetan literature on Wikimedia projects.
(Optional) Are you open to mentorship (either receiving or offering it)?
[edit]- Yes i am open to receive mentorship from any mentor.
