IRC/Cloaks/Bots

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
< IRC‎ | Cloaks
(Redirected from IRC/Bots/Cloak requests)

In order to better organise the use of IRC bots related to Wikimedia projects, or under project cloaks, a dedicated cloaking system has been introduced. Two cloaks are available for bots, depending on their function and the reason for the cloak:

  1. A Wikimedia bot cloak, in the form wikimedia/bot/botnick for approved bots that are for Wikimedia's use.
  2. A cloak under the owner's nick, in the form wikiproject/usernick/bot/botnick. This is for any bot that is owned by a user with a Wiki*edia cloak that wants a cloak for their bot that can be traced back to them.

Note that the owner must have a normal user cloak before submitting a request here.

It is planned that these requests will be checked far less frequently than normal cloaks, depending on how much this page gets used. If your request has been waiting for more than two weeks, feel free to ping Sean on IRC/talk page/e-mail etc.

Archived requests can be found here.

Changing a cloak

To get a cloak changed, just remove your bot from the table on IRC bots and then simply file a new request, and the old cloak will be overridden.

Removal of cloaks

Drop Sean a line if you want a cloak removing.

Requesting a cloak

Before requesting any cloaks, please ensure that you have completed the following steps:

  • Register the bot's nickname using /msg nickserv register <password> <email> while on IRC under the bot's nickname. You may find that you can't use the same address as you use for your own nickname: if you are using gmail, try adding +bot before the @, e.g. user+bot@gmail.com
  • Group an alternate nickname for the bot e.g. botnick_ by going /nick botnick_ /msg nickserv group /nick botnick
  • Give the bot a realname/ircname of a url to information about the bot, or failing that, cloak/nick of the owner - see here.
  • Add the bot's details to IRC bots.

When these steps are complete, follow the instructions in the appropriate section below. If any further details are needed during the cloaking process, you will be contacted or memoed on IRC. Unfortunately, due to high load, notification is not normally given when a cloak is set.

Type one (wikimedia/bot/*)

Create a request using the example shown below, replacing the prompts with the bot's details. Then, list the request below the sample code. Finally, while identified as the bot's nick, send a memo to seanw saying something like "this bot belongs to botowner".

==== Botnick ====
* A complete summary of the bot's functions - ask yourself "why is this bot safe/useful enough to wear an official Wikimedia bot cloak?"
* A channel in which the bot can be found
* Your irc nick
* ~~~~
