The Igbo Wikimedians community started the 2025 Fiscal year with a General Meet-up for 2025. Other 2025 activities are summarized below.

Igbo Wikimedia User Group General Meeting 2025 - 25/01/2025

The Igbo Wikimedia User Group General Meeting 2025 took place on January 25, 2025, with the primary goal of planning the way forward for the community in the year 2025. Event page

The Igbo Wikimedians User Group in partnership with the CapX Community is organizing an online outreach session focused on the CapX Tool, a platform developed by and for the Wikimedia Movement. This session aims to educate community members on how to effectively utilize the CapX Tool to connect with peers, share skills, and collaborate on Wikimedia-related projects.

The IG Conference Experience Sharing Session engaged IG community members to share insights, experiences, and lessons learned from attending both local and international Wikimedia conferences, fostering knowledge exchange and community growth.

72 Hours Virtual Marathon Edit-a-thon - 11-14/04/2025

This project from April 11 - April 14, 2025 was strictly focused on clearing the backlog of articles with reference issues, broken links, and also strengthened localization efforts on translatewiki. Nearly 800 articles with reference errors were fixed, over 400 articles with broken or dead links were repaired, and significant progress was made on translatewiki. Documenting Nigerian census data on Wikidata and OpenStreetMap (Phase 1) 26/04/2025 - 10/05/2025

This Phase focused on updating wikidata items of all Nigeria local government areas with their census population. The event was a success; all 1991 and 2006 census populations were captured. See event page, dashboard for more details.

IG Capacity Building and Training- 01/05/2025

The IG capacity building and training session was organized to support community members seeking to learn or improve in event organizing, project management, language tools and translation ethics.

Documenting Nigerian census data on Wikidata and OpenStreetMap (Phase 2) 21/06/2025 - 28/06/2025

The second phase focused on adding OpenStreetMap identifiers to Wikidata. All Nigeria local government area items have their OpenStreetMap identifiers linked, except for a few local government areas whose boundaries are not yet captured on OpenStreetMap. See event page for more details.

Wikifunctions Deployment on Igbo Wiktionary - 22/05/2025

The Igbo Wikimedians User Group had a call with a representative of the Wikimedia Foundation's Wikifunctions team to discuss and carry out a demo for the deployment of the Wikifunction to the Igbo Wiktionary.

72 Hours Virtual Marathon Edit-a-thon 2.0 - May 28–31, 2025

This project was a continuation of the pilot held in April 2025. From May 28 - May 31, 2025, participants worked under 72 hours by fixing articles with reference errors, fixing pages with broken files, and also strengthened localization efforts on translatewiki. A training session on file licensing and usage on Wikimedia projects was facilitated by Hilary Ogali. At the end of the marathon, 590 articles with reference errors were fixed, and 190 articles with broken files were edited. Remarkable progress was also made on translatewiki. Build Your Own Road Map for Igbo Language Digital Activism - May 31 - June 1, 2025

In partnership with the Rising Voices and Global voices and supported by the UNESCO - Abuja, the Igbo Wikimedians User Group organised a 2-days workshop which focused on equipping members of the Igbo Wiki Fan Clubs, Imo State University and Alvan, respectively with the knowledge and tools needed to promote and preserve the Igbo language using the digital spaces and tools. The workshop combined interactive discussions, expert presentations, and hands-on training to foster digital language activism using Wikimedia projects and was concluded with a translate-a-thon activities where participants get to translate indigenous languages, language activities and dialects from the English Wikipedia to the Igbo Wikipedia. 72 Hours Virtual Marathon Edit-a-thon 3.0 - July 28–31, 2025

The third edition of the 72 hours virtual marathon edit-a-thon held from July 28 to July 31, 2025. This was a continuation of ongoing efforts to improve articles on the Igbo Wikipedia and intensify localization efforts on translatewiki. By the end of the marathon, 275 articles with reference errors were fixed, 271 pages with broken files were fixed, 305 biography pages were added the DEFAULTSORT template, and efforts on translatewiki were further intensified. 72 Hours Virtual Marathon Edit-a-thon 4.0 - September 27–30, 2025

The fourth edition of the 72 hours virtual marathon edit-a-thon held from September 27 to September 30, 2025. This was a continuation of ongoing efforts to improve articles on the Igbo Wikipedia and intensify localization efforts on translatewiki. By the end of the marathon, 324 articles with reference errors were fixed, 417 pages were improved and categorized properly, 330 biography pages were added the DEFAULTSORT template, and efforts on translatewiki were further intensified. Increasing visibility of Nigerian secondary schools on wikidata - 25/04/2025

This project seeks to enhance the online presence of Nigerian secondary schools by adding structured and verifiable data about them to Wikidata. By documenting key information, such as school names, locations, and founding dates, the project aims to improve data accessibility, support educational research, and promote digital visibility for schools across Nigeria. It encourages community participation and fosters a sustainable approach to maintaining accurate school-related data online. We had an online training on 25th of April 2025. many participants joined during the training section. they were exposed more on how to search for already existing items on wikidata, how to create items,how to update and improve already existing items on wikidata. Data reimbursement were given to 20 participants after the online training. We had 7 days edit-a thon section from 25th-2nd May 2025. At the end of the project 4 participants were selected as the winners all the gifts vouchers were sent out to their respective locations.The project significantly improved public access to information, with over 253 wikidata items across Nigerian secondary schools being created and updated with geo-location on Wikidata. The initiative fostered active community participation, with more than 39 editors contributing updates and improving to the data. The project's purpose and objectives were fully achieved.

Wiki for Catholic Youths - 27/04/2025

Being a project in collaboration with Catholic youths in Awka, this event happened physically in Awka, Anambra state on the 27th of April 2025. It continued with an Edit-a-thon that ran through the week and ended on the 4th of May 2025. It recorded tremendous achievements with a total of 28 registered participant, 20 of them being new youth volunteers. A total of of 82 new article was created on the Igbo Wikipedia, with 124 resources edited. below are resources for your kind perusal;

Igbo Wikiquote Clean Up - 04/05/2025

The Igbo Wikiquote Cleanup Project was organized to enhance the quality of Igbo Wikiquote pages by introducing structure and consistency to existing entries. The initiative began with awareness campaigns across multiple Wikimedia WhatsApp groups, followed by an onboarding and training session on 4 May 2025, which I coordinated, with User:Bridget2023 serving as the lead trainer.

As part of the project, we conducted a week-long cleanup contest, prioritizing pages related to living people and women. The project was a success, surpassing expectations with 160 total edits and 131 pages improved. below are resources for your kind perusal;

Nigerian Legislators Translation Project - 10-24/05/2025

The Nigerian Legislators Translation Project was a collaboration between the Igbo Wiki Fan Club Imo State University and the Igbo Wiki Fan Club Alvan. It was aimed at improving the availability of information on Nigerian lawmakers by translating their biography articles from English to Igbo language. The project ran from May 10 – May 24, 2025. At the end of the contest, over 385 articles were correctly translated by the participants. For more details, see event page and dashboard.

Enhancing Oral Health Information Accessibility in Nigeria through Wikidata Expansion and Igbo Language Localization - 20/05/2025

Oral health is an essential component of overall well-being that is often overlooked, This project aims to leverage World Oral Health Day to significantly expand the representation of Nigerian dental professionals and facilities on Wikidata. Through a focused edit-a-thon, we will create new Wikidata items, enriching existing data, and translate item descriptions into the Igbo language. This initiative directly addresses the critical need for improved access to health information in Nigeria while simultaneously supporting the Wikimedia 2030 strategic direction of knowledge equity and language diversity. In Addition, World Oral Health Day 2025 is observed on 20 March.

The event successfully advanced our goal of making oral health information more accessible to the public in Nigeria — especially in the Igbo language. Improving the Igbo Wiktionary 31/05/2025

Improving the Igbo Wiktionary project is focused on documenting Igbo words, phrases, definitions, and translations. The event was a physical event involving Quiz Session, training/workshop on the basics of creating/editing contents on the Igbo Wiktionary. participants also learnt how to create/categorize contents. A total of 24 participants were in the in attendance and they learnt what the Wiktionary is all about. After the training session, we had the practical session and 581 pages were improved.See Outreach Dashboard

The Igbo Wiktionary is a valuable resource language learners, researchers, and the entire Igbo community are encouraged to contribute to the Igbo Wiktionary project as part of our efforts to preserve and promote our language and culture.


Enhancing the Igbo lexicographical data on Wikidata 06/06/2025

Enhancing the Igbo lexicographical data on Wikidata aimed to increase and improve the representation of the Igbo language on Wikidata by adding structured lexical entries. The project focused on documenting Igbo words, their meanings, grammatical categories, and translations, with the goal of supporting language preservation and open access to Igbo linguistic resources. The event was a physical event involving training and workshop on the basics of creating/editing lexemes on the Wikidata. participants also learnt how to create and add lexical features. A total of 22 participants were in the attendance and they learnt what the Igbo Lexicographical data is all about. After the training session, we had the practical session and a total number of 899 edits were made. The project's purpose and objectives were fully achieved.

Plan for Sustainability

Wider Igbo-speaking community, Language learners, scholars can all benefit from the Igbo lexicographical entries on Wikidata. Building on the success of this project, we urge additional participants to join efforts in enhancing and growing Igbo language data on Wikidata as a follow-up to this project to support the preservation and promotion of the Igbo language and culture through open and accessible knowledge platforms.

Nigeria's indigenous musical instruments on Wikidata 29/06/2025

This project aimed to document and preserve Nigeria’s indigenous musical instruments, with special attention to those from Igbo culture, by adding structured data to Wikidata. Through online training, community engagement, and an edit-a-thon, participants were equipped with skills to contribute effectively to Wikidata.

A total of 20 participants joined the project, with over 500 Wikidata items created or improved The project increased awareness of Igbo musical heritage, promoted the use of the Igbo language on Wikidata, and empowered new contributors to engage in open knowledge work.

Challenges such as internet connectivity and technical learning curves were addressed through data support, hands-on training, and real-time assistance. Prizes and incentives helped motivate participation.

The project successfully contributed to the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and strengthened community participation in documenting indigenous knowledge on Wikimedia platforms.

Mapping out healthcare centres in Nigeria 2.0 1/06/2025

Mapping out Healthcare Centres in Nigeria 2.0 which is a second phase of the project, showcases the success of Wikidata in revolutionizing healthcare accessibility in Nigeria. Over 700 healthcare centers across Nigeria have been accurately mapped out, providing crucial data on their locations, services offered, and contact details. The training was held on 1st June 2025 which was followed by an edit-a-thon that ended on 7th June 2025, we recorded over 2000 contributions... Exploring Wikisource Project, 13/06/2025

Explore Wikisource was a Hybrid program which the online event and the Physical event were held on the 13th and 14th June, 2025, respectively.

The event was organized so as to equip members of the community with the knowledge to effectively contribute to Wikisource. It also focused on tutoring editors on how to make edits on the Igbo WikiSource. Participants were introduced to Wikisource, containing authors' pages, indexes, etc., and were also trained on how to create and translate index pages.

A contest was also organised for the participants, and three winners got their gift vouchers. At the end of the event, there was a total of 105 pages created and 50 Index pages translated as of 20th June, 2025.

African Indigenous Music: Wikidata Label and Description Translation 05/07/2025

The project aim was to translate Wikidata labels and descriptions of African indigenous music from English to Igbo, enhancing accessibility and visibility of African cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects. By focusing on African traditional music. It was a hybrid training session, the online session was carried out on 27th June 2025 while the in person was on 5th July 2025. Igbo Language Audio Project – 13/09/2025

The Igbo language audio project was a collaboration between the Igbo Wiki Fan Club Imo State University and the Igbo Wiki Fan Club Alvan. It was aimed at improving the availability of audio content in the Igbo language. The project which held from 13 September - 27 September 2025, focused on creating accurate and high quality audio pronunciations of Igbo indigenous names, traditional music and instruments, heritage sites, traditional ceremonies and other expressions, which were first uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring accessibility to both Igbo and non Igbo speakers. These audio pronunciations were added to their respective pages on Igbo Wikipedia and Igbo Wiktionary. A total of 214 audio files were recorded, uploaded, and linked to their respective pages. Overall, the project promoted community engagement, cultural preservation and language revitalization, and served as a sustainable resource for research or reference. Wiki for Catholic Youths: An Introduction to Wiktionary- 13/09/2025

Being a project in collaboration with Catholic youths in Asaba, Delta state. This event happened physically in Asaba, Delta state on the 13th of September 2025. It continued with an Edit-a-thon that ran through the week and ended on the 21st of September 2025. It recorded tremendous achievements with a total of 21 registered participant, 20 of them being new youth volunteers. NYCN Anambra South Holds Successful Wikipedia Training on 13/09/2025

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Anambra South Senatorial Zone in partnership with Wikimedia Igbo Wikimedia successfully organized a Wikipedia training workshop on Saturday, 13th September 2025, at the Nnewi North Local Government Secretariat.

The training, which was attended mainly by members of the NYCN Anambra South Executive Council, focused on equipping participants with digital knowledge and practical skills in Wikipedia editing.

During the session, participants were introduced to Wikipedia and its sister projects, highlighting the importance of open knowledge, collaboration, and the role of young people in shaping online content about Nigeria and Anambra State. Practical sessions were held where participants created new Wikipedia accounts and learned step-by-step how to edit and improve articles.

The programme was facilitated by Comr. Onyinye Jane Achukwu, the NYCN Anambra State Director of Education and a dedicated Wikimedian, and co-facilitated by Vivian Uyanwa. Both facilitators guided participants through hands-on exercises and shared insights on how youths can leverage Wikipedia for digital empowerment and community development.

To further sustain engagement, the training launched a one-month Wikipedia editing contest, which officially kicked off during the workshop. This contest is designed to encourage participants to actively contribute, enhance their editing skills, and add valuable information about Anambra South and Nigeria to the global encyclopedia.

In total, 15 participants took part in the training. The atmosphere was interactive, impactful, and inspiring, leaving participants motivated to continue contributing to the growth of free knowledge.

The NYCN Anambra South leadership expressed appreciation for the successful turnout and emphasized the importance of digital literacy and knowledge sharing among youths.Event page


Creating awareness and increasing the representation of African women in science, technology, engineering,and mathematics (STEM) on 24/10/2025

This is a project that promotes the visibility of successful women in STEM. It was a physical event that took place in Asaba, Delta State on the 24th of October 2025. It recorded an amazing achievements with a total of 24 registered participants, and 5 new volunteers. A total of 614 edits was made.

Faces Behind Pages Wikisource Campaign, 05/10/2025

Faces Behind the Pages was an online program held to enhance contributors’ understanding of creating and improving author pages on Wikisource. The event aimed to highlight the importance of documenting authors whose works are hosted on the platform and to strengthen community participation in maintaining well-structured, informative author pages.

During the event, participants were introduced to the purpose and structure of author pages on Wikisource. The program also featured a mini contest to reward top contributors who demonstrated excellence in author page creation.

At the end of the project, a total of 910 author pages were created or improved, and several community members gained confidence in creating and maintaining author pages independently.
