...Il existe encore dans l'église abbatiale de Saint-Denis deux statues transportées par Alexandre Lenoir au Musée des monuments français et provenant de l'église Notre-Dame de Corbeil; ces deux figures baptisées des noms de Clovis et de Clotilde, sans autorité, sont de la même époque que celles du portail occidental de Chartres. Longues comme celles-ci, exécutées avec un soin extrême, remarquables d'ailleurs comme style, très-intéressantes au point de vue des vêtements, rendues avec une grande finesse, elles nous fournissent des types de têtes qui ne rappellent en rien ceux de Chartres. Voici (fig. 8) celle du roi. Ce masque n'est pas la reproduction d'un type admis, d'un canon; c'est, pour qui sait voir, un portrait ou plutôt un type de race, un individu par excellence...
