International Museum Day 2022
Information for local organizers

Introduction

The International Museum Day (IMD) on 18 May is an event organized by the International Council of Museums since 1977 to raise awareness that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”

For several years, the event has been an occasion for us to improve the presence of museums on Wikipedia, Wikidata and further Wikimedia projects.

After the events in 2020 and 2021 the communities of the Wikimedia projects are invited to participate in the International Museum Day in 2022 again. The initiative runs from 4 to 18 May 2022. All Wikimedia affiliates are welcome to organize localized projects based on the prepared framework. The overall project is coordinated by Wikimedia CH (WMCH) in association with Wikimedia Österreich (WMAT) and direct support by Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) and the Volunteer Supporters Network (VSN).

In addition a Wikidata competition to improve the data about museums and related people, objects and events will be organized (similar to the one in 2021). It is held in the form of localized versions sharing the same basic concept but focusing on the geographical area of the respective affiliate. Instead of an overall prize, for every local version three winners will be chosen. Editors from all over the world can participate in any local edition. Taking part in this competition is optional for the affiliates that join the International Museum Day project.

What do you get

An central landing page will be prepared in English, presenting a short introduction to the IMD in general and descriptions on how to get involved as a contributor. This page serves as a template in regard of content and design for the localized versions that will be created by the affiliates joining in (see below: What is needed from your side).

The project page will also encompass the map of the respective country or region with the museums there that can be used as a starting point by contributors (similar to the map in 2021). These maps will be prepared for the participating affiliates after they joined the project.

A central notice for the participating affiliates (across the Wikimedia projects of the respective country or region) as well as the key visuals used for promotion on-wiki, on social media etc. will be prepared in English.

For communication among the organizers, a mailing list will be available.

Wikidata competition

Wikidata Contest
In case an affiliate also joins the Wikidata competition the respective pages will be made available for localization. Contributors will find all the information about the competition on four pages: “Start Page”, “Participate”, “Tools & Games”, and “Results”. Additionally user boxes similar to those of 2021 will be prepared for the participants’ and the winners’ user pages on Wikidata. The technical framework (some SPARQL queries, InteGraality table, Program & Events Dashboard to track the contributions, game) will be prepared in localized versions.
Online workshop for technical tools

We prepare all the tools for you – but if you want to understand how they work and how you can use them for other projects, we provide a one-hour online workshop on Thursday, 12 May 2022, 1-2 pm UTC. You will learn more about the usage of Programs & Events Dashboards with Wikidata queries and the InteGraality tool. Additionally a documentation will be published online.

If needed: Prizes

For each local competition there should be prizes for the first three places, each worth 150 Euros, therefore a total of 450 Euros. To enable local organizers who cannot pay for prizes themselves to participate, there are prize donors for a total of 10 local competitions. These prizes will be administered by Wikimedia Österreich, which will also contact the winners regarding their prizes, and will consist of purchases from selected museum online shops.

There aren't any prize packages available anymore (2022-04-25).

What is needed from your side

Translation into your language

All (main) languages of the local organizers should be covered. The central landing page will be prepared in English. Other language versions will have to be translated by the respective local organizers. The same goes for the pages regarding the Wikidata competition in case you join in as well.

Monitoring and communication

The local project page, especially its discussion page, should be monitored by the local organizers of the respective countries and regions. Please contact us if you need assistance in answering questions. If a localized version of the Wikidata contest is offered by the affiliate the respective pages should also be watched.

Survey

By the end of June 2022 we will send out a short survey to all local organizers. This should help us to improve our project. Please share your experiences with us until the end of July 2022.

Prizes and winner notification for Wikidata competition

For each local competition there should be prizes for the top three places, each worth 150 euros, therefore a total of 450 euros. It's up to you what these prices are. The nature of the prizes should be published before the start of the competition. We recommend non-cash prizes such as purchases from online museum shops.

The following list provides links to museum shops where ordering online and a worldwide shipment to winners is expected to be possible. You may provide the whole list in your localized edition of the competition or just a selection or add other museum shops of which you know, that ordering online and worldwide shipment is possible. The list can be provided to the winners so they can select items of up to EUR 150 from there. Then they should send their choices (along with a postal address) to the local organizer who will handle order, payment and the shipment from the shop to the winner.

You will be notified by Wikimedia Österreich who the three winners of your local competition are on 31 May 2022 (based on the Dashboard results). Please follow up right away:

  1. Notify your three winners on their user discussion pages. For this we provide a babel box and a text in English that you can adapt.
  2. Email your three winners via wikimail explaining how they get their prizes. Please ensure that all prizes are submitted by the end of June 2022.

If you can’t provide prizes yourself, please see the section “If needed: prizes” above. In this case, please do step 1 anyway (notifications on user discussion pages), only step 2 would then be taken over directly by Wikimedia Österreich.

A template text for the winner notification on user discussion pages will by published here by the end of April 2022.
